The conflict between Ivan and his wife, Praskovya, leads to much of Ivan's unhappiness in his life. The two of them never really think about the other's feelings, and they often argue over little things, which causes Ivan to grow more irritated. Praskovya is not the best wife as she had few feelings of sorrow for Ivan because she, too, was materialistic, and does not have strong feelings.

This portrays the conflict that Ivan Ilyich has regarding his looming death. At first when he fell off the ladder he acted as if he was fine. Later, when the doctors come to see him, though, he starts to get worried about his condition and realizes that he is indeed going to die. This terminal illness stays the main conflict throughout the novella as Ivan has to learn to deal with it and accept that death is coming.

He is concerned about having lived the wrong life and not the right one after he starts to pay attention to Gerasim and the way he acts compared to Ivan's other friends. He realizes that he has been focusing on the wrong things in life, not the moments, and he is going to try and make things better before his death.

He knows that his life is over and that there is nothing that can be done, yet the doctors do not say anything to that nature.

This is an example of verisimilitude in that it shows how every guy who ever lived wants to be thought of as tough and strong. When Ivan falls off the ladder, he downplays the injury and says it is just a bruise, even though he knows it hurts more than that. In many situations, when a guy is asked if he is 'ok' after it looks like he got hurt, his response will be that he is fine. This is a humorous example of verisimilitude that definitely applies to guys today.

It shows that Ivan moves up through society and gets promoted, but then it also shows his final fall.
