Perseverance in getting the life Jeannette worked all her life for during her childhood.

Perseverance can be shown by Jeannette always going the extra mile and working hard to achieve her goal of having a prosperous life when she gets older. This theme of perseverance can be shown on page(203) when Jeannette writes, "That year I started working for the school newspaper, The Maroon Wave. I wanted to join some club or group or organization where I could feel I belonged." This quote shows how Jeannette had the desire to push on through life and not want to be like her parents but can make something out of herself.

The image above shows the job of a reporter, what Jeannette wants to be. This represents a theme of perseverance in the book because to be the one in the room where things happen, Jeannette gets to become the person to tell those stories which takes hard work and grit to get there from where she was when she was younger.

Self-sufficiency in finding a way to survive under the harsh conditions her parents put her and her siblings through.

Jeannette at an extremely young age had to find a way to live and be self-sufficient throughout her entire childhood one way she did so was shown on the page(68),¨We kids usually kept our hunger to ourselves but we were always thinking of food and how to get out hands on it. During recess at school, I´d slip back into the classroom and find something in some other kids' lunch bag that wouldn't be missed.¨...¨If I was playing in a friend's yard, I´d ask if I could use the bathroom, and if no one was in the kitchen, I'd grab something out of the refrigerator or cupboard and take it into the bathroom and eat it.¨ This routine for Jeannette though unfortunate connects to the theme of self-sufficiency by finding a way to live because of her parent's shortcomings as caretakers.

The image above depicts someone taking an apple which relates to the theme of self-sufficiency because of what Jeannette had to do to survive. Jeannette had to do what she had to do to get by and if it meant taking food from her friends family or classmates that's what it meant.

Unconditional love within there family no matter what happens.

Unconditional love is a common theme in The Glass Castle and the Walls family, whenever there's a bump in the road or something pulls them apart they always find a way to come back together. This tie of unconditional love can be shown on the page,(288)¨We started talking about some of Dad's great escapades: letting me pet the cheetah, taking us Demon Hunting, giving us stars for Christmas.¨ We should drink a toast to Rex,¨ John said.¨...¨She held up her glass. Life with your father was never boring.¨...¨I could almost hear Dad chuckling at Mom's comment in the way he always did when he was truly enjoying something.¨ This moment at the family dinner when Rex was no longer with them shows the Walls family's unconditional love for one another knowing no matter what they go through or how bad or good or how distant they get they will always be each other's family.

I chose the photo above because it represents a family being together and sharing a moment. This family being together can represent the unconditional love shown between the Walls family during moments like the Thanksgiving dinner they had brought them together.

Broken promises to Jeannette about her future and what Rex would do for her.

Throughout the book, Rex continues to make many promises to his children that he can't keep especially when he promised Jeannette they would build the Glass Castle together and Jeannette begins to doubt him on page (238),¨I stared at the plans. Dad,¨ I said, you'll never build the Glass Castle.¨...¨Are you saying you don't have faith in your old man?¨…¨ Even if you do I'll be gone. In less than three months, I'm leaving for New York City.¨...¨ I'll build the Glass Castle, I swear. Well, all live in it together.¨ This promise that Jeannette knew after she got older would never be seen through she had accepted that they would never have a glass castle after all.

The picture I chose represents the promises that Rex previously made to Jeannette who was constantly dreaming of something bigger and always wanted to do more.

Rex's alcoholism affects how he raises his children.

At the beginning of The Glass Castle, we can see how the Walls family is affected by Rex's alcoholism, leading to many disappeared nights and angry fights amongst one another. More notably Rex's outraged reaction after they received help from a stranger makes him question his worth as a father and question if he can take care of his kids. This set off Rex's ego after promising he would become sober now he's going multi-day bender, as shown on page (122), "We turned and saw Dad. He tripped on the coffee table. When we tried to help him, he cursed and lurched at us, swinging his fists."..."I didn't feel like celebrating. After all, he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze." This quote applies to the theme of alcoholism through the story because it shows how much it affected the children, especially Maureen. After all, she was the one who used up her Christmas wish for Rex to stop drinking, which became a real letdown for the children.

The image I chose above is meant to represent the theme of alcoholism throughout the book, more specifically how the mental effect of drinking affected Rex's ability to parent his kids.

The importance of education and teaching, how knowledge affected Jeannette.

Rose Mary and Rex had a much different style of parenting and although it was different they always taught the importance of knowledge and words. Together they read many books and learned new ways of doing math and reading comprehension at high levels. This theme throughout The Glass Castle of the importance of education can be shown as Jeannette enters her new school with a full box of knowledge that even her teachers can't seem to understand, shown on pages (136-139), "You can take my word for it that Jeannette and Brian are exceptionally bright, even gifted."..."The principal looked at me blankly." He can't make out what you saying," Mom told me, "Try to talk slowly."..."The principal decided that Brian and I were both a bit slow and had speech impediments that make it difficult for others to understand us." This quote goes to show that some people aren't very good at understanding your knowledge but it's important to note how Rose Mary advocated for Brian and Jeannette's intelligence that the principal has mistaken for incompetence because of his inability to find a way to communicate with them professionally.

The image above represents an extremely gifted child which goes along with the book's ongoing theme of the importance of education and learning.
