It is between the current Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad and both foreign and domestic groups that oppose the Syrian government. This uprising in oppositional groups is inspired by the Arab springs, where uprisings successfully toppled Tunisia’s and Egypt’s governments (Al Jazeera 2018). In response, the authoritarian regime, led by President Bashar al-Assad, killed hundreds of protestors and imprisoned many more. Many rebels have formed groups, such as ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and FSA (Free Syrian Army), among many. The war has also been worsened by international intervention, with the USA and Russia being the biggest players. The USA has launched many anti-Assad operations in coalition with ISIL. Russia, in support of the current regime, has also funded and enacted operations in this area. Because of this, the fighting has been going on for more than a decade now. The large amounts of Syrians leaving Syria means that a lot of Syrian culture is being spread. The al Sharaa family were originally heading towards Sweden, and then Finland, before finally being granted entry into the United States. These countries all have a higher quality of life than Jordan and Syria, and allow these refugees to live a better life, one where they don't have to fear for their lives every day.
