Conception-Sperm Meets Egg

Conception occurs two weeks from the first day of a women's last menstrual period. Fertilization is the begining stage of pregnancy. The process of fertilization takes place between the egg and the sperm. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube where the sperm meets the egg and implants. Only one sperm will meet the egg and determine the sex and genetic make up of the baby.

Weeks 4-8 of Pregnancy

An embryo forms by the fourth week of pregnancy, By the fifth week the cell is developing. The brain, spinal cord, heart, and facial features are begining to form.

Weeks 9 to 12 of Pregnancy

At week nine, the embryo is now a fetus. It is still to early to determine the sex of the baby. Facial features continue to develop and the baby is now growing larger and stronger. By the tenth and tweleth week the baby is almost fully formed.

Weeks 13 to 17 of Pregnancy

During these weeks the second trimester begins and all of the babys internal organs have formed and will continue to form through the second and third trimesters. The baby now can turn around and kick. At week fourteen the baby's sex is now apparent. For boys the prostate appears and for girls ovarian follicles begin forming. During week fifteen the baby's skeleton is developing bones and will appear on ultrasound images. Sixteen weeks the baby's eyes and ears are almost at their full position. At seventeen weeks into pregnancy fat stores and begin to develop under the baby's skin. This fat will provide energy and keep the baby warm.

Weeks 18-22 of Pregnancy

Between eighteen and twenty-two weeks the mother can now feel the baby move. By twenty-two weeks the baby is gaining more weight and becoming more active and able to swallow. The baby's hair is now growing and visable.

Weeks 23-26 of Pregnancy

During these weeks the baby begins to have rapid eye movement, and their tongue will start to develop taste buds and they will begin using their senses. Fingerprints and footprints are forming. The baby is now regularly sleeping and waking up.

Weeks 27-30 of Pregnancy

The third trimester has begun. The baby now can open their eyes and is practicing breathing. The baby is also sleeping and waking up at specific times throughout the day.

Weeks 31-34 of Pregnancy

The is the stage were the baby is maturing and gaining weight. The mother's body is continuing to send the baby antibodies that will protect them from infection as they continue to grow.

Weeks 35 of Pregnancy to Birth

The baby is now upside down in the uterus and the baby's head will rest on the cervix. The lungs are fully formed and ready to funtcion on their own. The baby will drop and settle down in the mother's pelvis. The mother should now start to keep track of the baby's movements. Contractions will begin and the cervix will start to open. When the amniotic sac breaks the mother's water has broken. The cervix will open and thin, which is known as dialation. The baby will move down with each contraction. With several pushes the baby's body will emerge. During the final stage of labor the placenta will detach and the process of birth is complete.
