In Auschwitz, June 1940, A Polish boy scout who goes by the name Kazimierz Piechowski was imprisoned in Auschwitz. A 2011 interview with Piechowski with The Guardian’s Homa Khaleeli talked about what he did as a prisoner. Piechowski would move the bodies of executed prisoners, he knew how to speak German. He said “The death wall was between blocks 10 and 11.They would line prisoners up and shoot them in the back of the head,” “Sometimes it was 20 a day, sometimes it was 100, sometimes it was more. Men, women and children.” Piechowski was 19 when the Nazis took over the town he lived in, all his friends were also scouts, and they were captured by the soldiers. Piechowski had tried to run away, but failed and got caught. An estimated total of Jews that were annihilated in the concentration camp was 1.1 million.

Piechowski survived the war, and was sent to the Soviet gulag for 7 years for joining the Polish Home Army. This is a neutral impact because he did survive, but he was still punished for what he did. Nonetheless he escaped and seeked vengeance on the Nazis.
