BodyGuardian is small wearable sensor that facilitates remote physiological monitoring of a patient's cardiac activity. This product produced by Preventice Services and the Mayo Clinic can perform regular monitoring of ECG and cardiac rhythms.

The data collected from the device is accessed by the patient on his or her smartphone. When irregularities are detected, BodyGuardian communicates with the patient, via the smartphone application, to inquire about patient symptoms. All event data is then sent securely to the patient's health care provider in real time for appropriate intervention. Health care providers can also securely view data anytime from anywhere to monitor progress, review notifications, and set individualized threshold alerts for patients.

This physician-directed, patient self-management approach has the potential to maintain wellness without the need for the patient to travel to the provider's office.

Pros

-The sensor is discreet and pocket-sized (smaller than cell phone). This gives patients complete mobility and more freedom.
-Health care providers can securely view data anytime from anywhere, even if they are thousands of miles away.

-Data can be stored 30 days at a time.
-Will alert both the patient and physician when a clinically relevant event occurs.

Cons

-Some patients may find phone application difficult to use. For example, geriatric patients that are not familiar with phone applications or responding to notifications will need a thorough orientation.
-Unknown costs and/or coverage by insurance companies.
