Performing CPR is kind of intimidating to think if I were to be the only rescuer on the scene. However, in the instances when I have been on calls with my department where CPR is in progress, it is very clear that you go into "work mode" and don't let fear or nerves get in the way of doing your job.

The compressions are extremely deep in the machine can be pretty loud.

Having gone through CPR classes with the YMCA as a youth or going through recertification classes with the DNR Parks and Recreation, the thought of preforming the technique on a patient is pretty intense. I've been on the scene of one or two cardiac calls, one that didn't go well and one that I vaguely remember going ok. I remember a lot of tense moments for sure. I wasn't the person preforming the technique, I either showed up right when it was called and another when the person started to come too.
I'm glad that this is something along with a lot of our trainings that is required every few years!

I took CPR classes way back as a junior counselor for camp in the ‘90’s. Before the barrier or even portable masks for CPR were a common thing. We only did a few demonstrations and practices on the CPR dummy in front of the bathhouse of the camp.
Thinking about CPR on an infant is worrisome as well. We have a brand new baby niece in the family and it’s easy to say “babies are tiny, be gentle” but actually holding one again just brings “tiny” and “fragile” back to the forefront of reality. But also knowing if any of the littles in our family choke or need help we will be able to do so makes for a feel good too.
Practice makes progress and progress is good. -Rory Terrien

I am looking forward to learning this skill. I have never done or even seen it done. Because of this class I now have a very basic idea of how to do it. I think if I had to, meaning I was the only person around, I think I could at least give a fighting chance to someone until help arrived. I’ll be honest and say I am a little nervous about breaking someone’s cartilage or worse their ribs. I understand that the alternative could be worse if I did nothing. Would I rather watch someone die or chance breaking a rib? Yeah I’d do my best and probably apologize to them while I’m doing it but than again. Who knows! In the moment the chance of a broken rib may not bother me at all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When I think of CPR, my mind tends to think of that one 'The Office' episode. I've taken one CPR class during my junior year of high school. I have not been to one since. I really feel like it will be different taking the course as a high schooler vs. an adult. I'm looking forward to taking the class again and going over those skills. Overall, I'd say I would be nervous doing CPR for the first time but I'm sure as I gain experience and confidence with that sort of thing, it will be better.

I think the idea that we all could be carrying the knowledge to help a complete stranger is a unifying thought.. with the development of hands-only CPR, literally anyone could save another person.

There is a new app called Pulse Point. Civilians can download the app and sign up for notifications. Then when a call comes through to dispatch with a patient not breathing and requiring CPR, the call gets sent to civilians where are nearby (1 mile or less depending on the user’s settings) alerting them that someone needs CPR and potentially having someone on scene minutes before EMS arrives.

That’s what I think about when I think of CPR.

Like many other students in this class, I too am not up to date with my CPR certification. And by not up to date I mean close to a decade. I took a CPR class as young as 10 years old as my brother and I wanted to be lifeguards. Over the years, I took a class here or there and remained somewhat familiar and comfortable. Since I left the military years ago, I have not taken any sort of CPR training so to say that I’m apprehensive is putting it lightly. Fingers crossed it’s like riding a bike. 😬
-Eric DeWeerd
