Description: Instead of jumping right into reading a book with your young one, preview the book to ensure the child gets the most out of the text. Look at the cover and illustrations. Ask and answer questions.
Advantages: Gets the child excited to read the text. Allows for a fuller understanding of the moral or concept of the book.
Disadvantages: Can sometimes loose the attention of the younger children.
http://www.ourkids.net/blog/early-literacy-strategies-26529/

Model Proper Reading Mechanics

Description: This is a great way to educate the child on proper reading! Flipping pages right to left may need to be shown to your child to ensure they know the proper way to read a book. Use your finger to show your child left to right scrolling while reading. Point out that you always start on the left hand side of the book, then move to the right hand side.
Advantage: Teaches the correct way to read a book!
Disadvantages: An adult could accidentally model an improper way to read or understand a book.
http://www.ourkids.net/blog/early-literacy-strategies-26529/

Plant Words During The Preview

Description: As you’re preparing a child to read a book to you, during the preview you’ll probably spot some words that your child may be unfamiliar with. So ‘plant it’ in his or her head as you look through the book.
Advantage: This technique allows the child to become familiar with certain words they may not have come across yet. This allows them to understand the text more efficiently.
Disadvantage: I don't see any disadvantage for this technique! http://www.readingrockets.org/

Use Picture Cues:

Description: Always use picture cues! It’s using a different strategy to decode a word. For example, if your reader is sounding out ‘c-c-c’ and not getting to ‘cat’ – point to the picture and say ‘what is that?’. It will help him to ‘read’ using not only words but also the picture cues. Builds confidence and skills in looking not just at text but at the whole book.
Advantage: Allows the child to figure out the word on their own with little help from an adult. Builds confidence and a want to keep reading.
Disadvantage: Children could be come more focused on relying on pictures for word advice instead of learning to read the word through spelling. Other than that I thought this strategy was very effective!
http://www.readingrockets.org/

This often works too when your eager reader becomes tired halfway through the book, but wants to continue and finish. You read one page, they read the next.
Advantages: It gives them a mental break, and helps to build confidence.
Disadvantages: I couldn't find a disadvantage for this strategy.
