The reality of child migrants, especially the ones who are alone who are forced to live far from their homeland and separated from their families need to be given a family at school. The absence of adults to accompany them prevents their voices from being raised and heard.

I teach in a small town near Caserta and Naples, Aversa, in an area where immigration is increasing.
At my school - scientific lyceum - there are few foreigners and generally well integrated. Nevertheless at the local level the problem of migration ihas become very important, especially in a low socioeconomic level area, as our, where the migrant is seen as someone who steals Italian job. Therefore the problem of integration is strongly felt by the teachers: it is necessary to train students to intercultural culture in order to avoid forms of racism and to understand the real reasons of new migrations.

My personal experience with newly arrived migrants is positive, because I taught during several years into a professional school where I found so many students who fleeing war or some other disaster that does not allow them to return to their homeland. I teach in a school, in north Italy, with a strong immigration: in some classes of kindergarten the number of migrant children is greater than the Italians; in my school, in some classes, the number of foreign students is very high, although by now many of them are migrants of "second generation", speak Italian, are well integrated into the classroom.

The specific aspect on which I feel less certain is how to deal with the situation of a student just arrived: how can I make him feel more at ease? Emphasizing the situation, in discussion with the class, or avoiding to note the problem?

The second difficulty is finding material (or building materials) that can be of assistance and allow the student to participate in the life of the class. Some years ago, for a student from Egypt, that didn’t say or understand one single word of Italian, I prepared some "stickers" and copybook where he could paste, connecting words, phrases, objects, images. It was a nice job, and, even now that Ahmed is in high school, he asks me to help with the study subjects (especially history).

I used the work I did for him for other pupils, changing and adapting, but I expect, by this course, which provide me other useful tools and, above all, that allows me to compare with other experiences that can help to deal with personally and (even socially) these experiences.

I am an EAL teacher in a large school of 1470 students. We have quite a large number of international students - most are social/economic migrants but we do
have a few refugee families from Syria too. They have integrated very well - a crucial factor to successful integration is the acquisition of English language skills.
Among Irish people in general, there is acceptance and welcome for refugees.

Irish people have been ranked as the most sympathetic towards Syrian refugees arriving in their country in a poll of 12 European nations.

Actually there's no foreign students in my school.
But there's a "Centro di prima accoglienza", an "Initial Reception Centre" that looks like a nazi lager, 20 km from where a live and work. It's near the local airport and you can see black people wandering up and down a very dangerous trunk road, seeking for a job or reaching the nearest grocery store or soup kitchen (20km north or 5km south).
My italian students thinks they're dirty, dangerous, terrorists. At first, they don't empathize with them.
Demagogy played by some crazy politicians, racism and fear of foreigners transferred from parents or friends overshadow the truth: immigrants or refugees, they don't want to be kept here. They dream about a fresh start, a bright future, a house, a job, safety and well-being.
When students realize that all those people are not a threat they seems confused. As I am confused. What can we do to help them? What can I do for them?
I'd really love to teach italian to those who want to but, as far as I know there's no evening classes arranged for newly arrived migrants.
So, all I can do is to feel sorry for them. Treatment they receive is unacceptable.
I hope this course will help me to help some of them.

I have already done my first MOOC about the issue of immigration. I am here to learn how to better approach it in my classes. I live in an area where we have had a lot of immigrants in the last 25 years. Because of the recession some left Italy but at work and at school we do need to face the topic. I can see that there are a lot prejudices against immigrants but I must say that I have worked with many of the classes where we had a lot of young students whose families had lived in Italy for some years. The biggest problems we had was dealing with newly arrived children or students who did not speak Italian or English. I feel that we need to become aware of their problems: most of them could not choose and were forced to leave their countries. Our students need to be aware that behind every man there is a story, a sad story. We do need to teach students to learn about them and share ideas about the importance of living together. As a teacher of English I would choose TED talks to make my students become aware of the problems of immigrants and their stories.

I don't have a lot of experience with refugees but I have worked in schools where there was an outstanding number of students who came from other countries or whose parents were immigrants. I totally agree with Nora when she says that each refugee has their own reasons to leave their countries. I think that we can learn from cultures as a whole, but not from people. Each person has their own thinking and feelings and as teachers, we should understand and know each student's situation in order to be able to help them in their learning.

Last year was the one that marked the beginning of our cohabitation with newly arrived migrants. Teaching in a school near Hotspot was really easy for me and my students to get to this and talk with refugees. I am a Geography teacher at an upper secondary school in Italy and, in a couple of weeks, I am going to discuss the topic of migration and refugees in my classes as I try to do every year. I think the main difficulty in discussing this topic is avoiding an exclusive quantitative approach which is inappropriate to show the complexity and the human sides of the phenomenon. It also may leads to generalizations which are not able to deconstruct misconceptions or generate different point of views. This means to research, find and adapt good material (real life stories, up-to-date in-depth news...) -not easy at all-. In Italy for years now it is experiencing a continuous arrival of migrants, the inclusion in our school situations I think is very humiliating for them. They are virtually catapulted into class without knowing the language and listen without being able to understand or take part. This makes me very sad. I firmly believe that should be their first language taught (learn quickly), then placed in classes. I still have the memory of a Kosovar girl, lively and attentive look, great desire to succeed, but one day is approaching, in an uncertain Italian tells me "I'm not stupid, in my country I had all high marks, I want to become a doctor like was my father, I decided that I go back to Kosovo I grandparents still there. Thanks professor you've realized that I'm not stupid and I wanted to say hello. " I could not change her mind, and even today what he told me and I try to do my best to help these kids fit in classes, but we would need to welcome and insertion organization different from today. For all I know, you better work in England and Germany. I hope that sooner or later in Italy the Ministry of Education
change the current rules.

I've never actually had a refugee in my classroom but we've been having lots of migrants from many different places from all around the worlds. Most of their families left their countries for economic reasons, to improve their own life and give their children a better future. We have tried to do our best to welcome and include both the kids and their families - even though the results have not always been for the best. At the moment, the situation isn't easy because the huge number of new comers increase the native families' prejudices and even hostility, and inclusion and integration are sometimes more difficult than it was few years ago. The topic of migration is hardly ever presented to our students and teachers themselves are not really that informed about it. We are still focused on our migration waves - as part of our history - but not really able to put ourselves in other people shoes, trying to understand what is happening, now.

I teach in a secondary school in Calabria in the south of Italy. In raising awareness about the sitiuation of newly-arrived migrants, I think the teacher's job is to help students and their families look beyond the political issues and very often disgraceful management of the CAS (Centro di Accoglienza Straordinaria) and SPRAR ((Sistema di protezione per richiedenti asilo e rifugiati) centres. The much publicized 45 euros per day per migrant breeds malcontent in a province (Vibo Valentia) where many families have much less that that to live on. Students see young, healthy migrants (usually men in their late teens or twenties) begging outside supermarkets but with the latest mobile phones in their pockets. Sometimes it is very difficult for the teacher to provide arguments for tolerance and acceptance when some locals feel they are being hard done by in a system that appears to care more for migrants than for locals. I try to work a lot on the cyclical nature of history to show my students that not so many years ago their own families were the migrants, moving abroad to find work and on the socio-political reasons, especially the European role and responsibility in carving up the Middle East in the twentieth centry (e.g. the Sykes - Picot Line). But it's not easy especially when you encounter some extremist political opinions.

I am workgin with the people who are come from different part of the World to Sweden. The main reason is war! They have not just a one problem: to learn the Swedish language but to accept and to be comfortable in the new country, Culture long away from their own coutnry. In my school there are no migrants resulting from the current crisis, but we always welcomed students (and families) from other countries, particularly coming from former Portuguese colonies, Eastern Europe (a consequence of the crisis experienced in the Balkans) and the economic crisis in Brazil. As a concerned teacher, I agree in promoting an open discussing about issue of refugees, involving all school community in migration issues and asylum to refugees, issues that have generated, for lack of information and training, discrimination, xenophobia and racism.

As European societies become more multi-cultural, the need to raise awareness and promote understanding of the many reasons for which people choose or are forced to leave their own countries grows. It is important to remember that refugees are no threat. Indeed, they have been threatened themselves. We must provide our students (so that they can disseminate at home!) with the opportunity to understand that behind each anonymous statistic related to migration and asylum there is a human face and a personal story. In doing so it also addresses issues related to discrimination and xenophobia. With this course, I want to be able to reach my students and engaged them in the construction of a better future, to promote respect for diversity and encourage social cohesion.

It 's really a hard work to face this topic in the classroom because students need clear, true and necessary information about the social, economical and political problems of migrants and refugees countries to realise this important topic. I, sometimes, feel less confident just for the fact that my three hours per week aren't enough to let my pupils understand the background of these unlucky people. So I will try to enlarge my students' cultural horizons showing them videos, photos, articles from newspapers which explain in a simple way the life in these countries. My main goal is just to let my students understand the respect and the sympathy for these people that are forced to escape from their homes either for polical reasons or economical ones and it isn't easy for them to abandon their affections and home countries. I hope this course will give me new ideas, tools and strategies to face this complex topic in my classroom.

The problem that I face is this uncertainty if I do enough to integrate different cultures in my school. We do not face the situation of having the refugees among us, however we admit students from all over the world to provide them with education, in the majority of cases, temporarily, as their parents are usually contract workers, diplomats or others who just reunite with families. So having over 30 nationalities at school, instead of great mixed family, we have got a lot of "national subgroups" which do not integrate if not at school.

I expect to find here among all of us and from you some advice on how to make them act together and unite not only when they stand against another newcomer or a refugee-to-come, who evokes fear and rebellion. This is one of few contexts when even different nationalities come together, it is really sad.

There are not refugees in the city I'm living and working. But this is the case only for the time being since soon about 500 refugees are going to be relocated from camps to houses in the city. In the town where I teach there for years a strong component Pakistani who do not always integrates fully in our society inside and outside the school, in spite of the many activities made by local agencies and the school in the first part.
The main difficulty is their clear desire to maintain this totally their customs and traditions, such as family only speak the dialect of their country of origin and also to school in his free time talking to each other in their own language even though they are able to speak in a decent Italian. It remains very difficult to their integration with the boys and girls Italian. Their meeting places during non-class hours are always different from the other boys. The obligation imposed by their religious community to attend the mosque several times in a week also makes it difficult to create opportunities to meet with the rest of the country .The rise of commercial activities managed by them also separates them from those possible opportunities to meet and share customs and traditions.
I have not in my classes recent arrivals , but it is as if the boys in the sixth grade we know earlier in the year had just arrived in our country even if they were born here, not all, but much of it.
I hope I have some work inspired and integration activities to this course

In my school, we don´t have any refugees, but we have many newly arrived migrants. We always had many students who came from other countries, so having these kind of students in classes is normal. Sometimes parents worry about it, if there are many students from other countries in the same class of their sons, but after a while they recognize that it is a positive experience for their children, because they deal with a multicultural world in their own classroom.
Although I have lots of experience working with students who come from other countries, I have no experience of working with refugees and this is one of the reasons why I enrolled in this course.

Hi! I’m an EFL teacher in Portugal in a rural area where we rarely have refugees – in fact, I’ve never heard of any. Instead, we’ve had some immigrants coming either from Africa or from Eastern European countries and those students have been promptly integrated in regular classes. Moreover, those students are always offered extra support as learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language and if needed the school also provides for some tutoring – as long as the learners and their families accept which has always been the case.

Though I have no experience with refugees, I do have some experience in integrating foreign students also by making other students (and their parents) aware of how enriching diversity and multiculturalism can be.

I live at Kalymnos, an islang at eas edge of Europe, where many refugees have arrived as a station temporarly and then they go away. Because Syrian people saved Kalymnians at bad national situations and accepted them to their country, Kalymnians help with all their heart every refugees people they arrive to our island. Last year our students worked at a cultural program named "we knitt with love for refugees". We knitted 60 scarves, caps, socks, gloves for many children and we are very proud for this. In the different schools I have taught over the years, I have noticed a paradox : There is racism and xenophobia coming even from people that have been migrants themselves or those coming from a 2nd generation of migrants. This year I am teaching in a primary school, where the majority of pupils belong to an ethnic minority and they themselves feel inferior to any other “race”. On top of that, an extremist group has gained a lot of supporters here in Greece and we even come across pupils sharing these ideas, coming from their immediate family environment. So, this is what I feel less confident to tackle: extreme negative reactions from pupils and parents alike. This is the gap I would like to fill in as well as some political issues involved.

Poland is a country against refugees. As a Pole, I am not proud of this. My students are taken away from their land, their friends, their language and merged in a different land where finding new friends is not so easy, where the Language is a real obstacle and where they have to be part of a world which has a lot of prejudices. We have to afford this theme in our class and let them speak about themselves, their families, the expectations of the adults and their feelings. One can safely say that in Malta the issue of migrants is fairly new. Our country used to be one where emigration was normal. It is said that there are as many Maltese emigrants, as there are Maltese on the island! Therefore, when refugees started making their way here by boat, we were not really prepared - we still aren't. In schools the challenges of teaching migrant students was not felt at the time, because those who came were mostly adults. Then suddenly - within around 5 years - school population exploded due to many migrants coming not only from within Europe but also from all over the world. Some schools have over 60 different nationalities! Teachers have never been trained in teaching such diverse classrooms, and sad to say that many do not seek this training. Thus migrant students are regarded as problems rather than resources which could help all children learn more. A migrant unit is being set up, which does not really focus on how to prepare schools to be inclusive, but on mostly ad hoc solutions as problems crop up. We do have a long way to go.

I do not feel at ease about my attitude towards migrants and refugees. I wonder if an "I care" attitude could imply an absumption of superiority. Something like: "I'm the centre; you are the border; I'm am European; you came from a savage and barbaric land".
This would be stupid. Upon this basis, you can't communicate. You can't communicate if you feel yourself on a safer and more elevated ground. This is probably a general truth which can be applied to all teaching and learning processes.

Form my point of view our government does not take of the situation of all these people and there are only ONG organizations working for the integration of them in our society.
Kids and young people are the most vulnerable people and education should give them support and use strategies for their integration. The problem is that some of these children have bigger problems than going to the school.

In Portugal we don't have the same problems regarding to migrants, because, most of them, are not looking forward to como here. However, there are some arriving here and I know that at leat one family has arrived to my hometown. In my school the newly arrived children migrants are coming with the support of their parents who moved to Belgium mainly for working reasons, like my husband and I did with our kids, in 2003.
This school has a long history in dealing with new comers and it provides a good and warmth welcoming in Belgium, particularly in Mol.

(does it ring a bell?) on Lesbos island.Well, Moria is a village of about 1.500 people which hosts a camp of refugees. The camp has a capacity of about 800 people and last September it hosted 4.000 people. The number is changing all the time and the conditions make people who are hosted there rebel all the time by putting fires in the camp and the nearby fields, demonstrating in the streets asking for the procedures of asylum to run faster.
Our students are aware of the situation and until last May they were very tolerant but also concerned about it. The way European States can host and receive refugees and migrants is important issue in the social and welfare politics.

Last year, I tried to deal with this topic through reading Literature. We read Ayse's story, a refugee girl who left her country Afganistan and came to Greece. Literature is a very useful tool to discuss with pupils and deal with some controversial issues.

I teach in South Italy. Lots of migrants and refugees land on our coasts. Unfortunately lots of people have bad prejudices about migrants such as "they come here to steal our homes, our jobs .../they destroy everything we give them..." and pupils grasp their family's opinions. So, the first thing I should do is fighting against ignorance and prejudices. Hi everybody, it's good to be with you. Sorry for being late, but I am super busy at the moment. Nevertheless I want to follow this course and will do my best to be faster with the next tasks. I am teaching German as a foreign language to migrant and refugee teenagers in a small secondary school in Germany. In my school we have got four classes for migrant and refugee students who are mainly studying German at the moment. But ... one by one very soon they have to be integrated into the regular classes, to make friends and to study more subjects besides German. I hope our German students will always welcome their new classmates, even when their German still isn't perfect, even when they look different and behave differently. We don't know what these young people have gone through before they arrived in Europe. First they don't have the words to tell, later they often don't want to talk because they don't want to think about the horrors of their past anymore. After the first time of euphoria many people in Germany are no longer welcoming, very selfishly they only think about themselves and don't want to share their wealth. I hope I find arguments to convince my students that the human right of asylum is much more worth than a full bank account, that migrants and refugees make our life much more colourful and more interesting as they open our minds to the whole world. I really hope I will get a lot of good arguments in this course and also ideas for activities how to work with students, both Germans and migrants and refugees.

I think that it is important to understand why a family or a person leaves his country going to an uncertain future as it is well said in the first videos.
In most cases war, persecution and poverty are the main causes...
So when children from other countries arrive and we welcome them in our society and schools, there are some laws and principles of incluion to be followed.
In Italy there are some governmental guidelines to schools about children and families coming from other countries. There are linguistic mediators and courses of L2 especially organized for first alfabetization in case they don't know the italian language.
Inclusion is one of the main objectives in school.
They are included in common classes and activities because full immersion in the language is fundamental and it os important to have positive relationships with peers.

Since 2006, I've been teaching ESOL to adult learners moving to the UK from all over the world for various reasons. For the last 18 months, I've been working for a charity organisation providing support to refugees and asylum seekers. That is to say that I've had experience of working in a very diverse learning environment. My main aim is to help my student learn English. Yet, I have realised that I should also support them in overcoming the issues around the psychological impact of migration, as well as in the process of assimilating to the new way of life. In our country the immigration is quite low. The number of asylum seekers and refugees is low as well. However we discuss with our students on the issue of newly arrived migrants by analyzing the different aspects of the forced and voluntary migration, such as causes, consequences, legal framework and so on. few speak english and translate to classmates what teacher says in english and not Greek!
The key point to to give a meaning to students on what are they doing in the class and that the lesson is not a period of time that has just simply to pass.

This is a topic that really interests me and I want to go on learning about it. I know it is a complex topic but what is life without some more defying things for us to fight for?

I haven’t dealt with it in my classes because there are no refugees in my school, but in a nearby village there are some 30 people who have been in Portugal for six months, so it will be possible that some will come to my school one of these days.

In fact, nobody can deny this is a topic we all have to live with nowadays in Europe. The greatest part of schools in Portugal doesn't have refugees but only economic migrants [in our school there are no migrants resulting from the current crisis, but we always welcomed students (and families) from other countries, namely from former Portuguese Colonies, Eastern Europe (a Balkans crisis consequence) and the economic crisis in Brazil].

Sicily is the door of Europe for migrants. Before teaching at primary school, I taught Italian as a Second Language at migrants (both adults and minors) so I get acquainted with the subject.
I think that Adult migrants have a different way to deal with their new life in Europe but the minors need to get protected more and, if possibile, they need to be adoctable by families trying to make them spending the shortest time ever in foster-homes.
