The asylum movement changed Americas perspective on the mentally ill. Before these asylums were established, the mentally ill were treated as less than human and cared for like animals. In these new institutions and with the help of Dorothea Dix, those who suffered from mental illness were now being treated and cared for properly. Although, due to overcrowding, many prisons and mental asylums ultimately fell short of these ideals.

Dorothea took a job at a prison to teach inmates. While there, she witnessed the inhuman treatment of prisoners and terrible conditions. This inspired her to tour the country and visit as many prisons as possible. She then shared what she found with the legislature of Massachusetts, who were shocked by the abuses prisoners faced. This sparked a movement to improve conditions for the imprisoned and insane. Her actions caused funds being set aside for the expansion of the state mental hospital in Worcester, and she continued to cause similar changes in other states.
