I think my reaction would be either fight, flight, or freeze. I never paid attention to it. I think keeping calm would be focusing on your breathing, and thinking of something happy. If you got a jumpscare because of something random, I honestly don't think there's a good way to prevent your reaction because you don't expect the scare.

Taking a deep breath, studying before the test (not the night before), and getting a good nights rest can help people stay more calm. Many people get jittery, nervous, and rethink everything they have learned, when they need to calm down. If you stay calm and understand the questions you will do great!

One common situation that would trigger a fear response is getting on a stage or presenting to a large audience. A lot of people, including myself, have a freeze response where they get too overwhelmed by the crowd. I sometimes have trouble talking in stressful situations and one thing I try to do is take a deep breath and/or excuse myself from the situation to calm down and clear my mind. However it doesn’t always work, and that’s okay, I’ll just have to keep trying to learn from my mistakes.

A common trigger for me is loud noises. They scare me. A grounding technique I've learned is the 54321 method. List 5 things you can see from where you are sitting that you normally wouldn't notice. Then name 4 things you can touch. Then 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and one you can taste. This helps by distracting your brain. Another is the 874. Breathe in for 8 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 4. This helps steady breathing and heart rate.

I often feel the urge to flight when I get a gut feeling about something. For example, I frequently walk my dog by myself on a trail close by my house. One day when I was walking, in the distance I saw an older man walking towards me and my dog immediately stopped walking and sat down to stare at him. This was very out of character for my dog so my heart rate became very fast and my hands were a bit shaky as I was nervous as to what was going to happen and was unable to get out of the situation. I felt I needed to run in effect of my nervousness and a gut feeling that this guy did not have good intentions. As a way to keep calm, I try and repeat to myself that I am strong and am able to handle anything.

When I feel powerless or helpless about something important that is happening in my life, my brain automatically goes into the fight, flight, or freeze response. My heart rate goes up, I become dizzy and nauseous, and my head starts to hurt. One thing I do to combat this is to excuse myself to a safe or calming space, such as a sauna. Another thing I do in the moment is learn to breathe or catch my breath, and realize that I am in control. Something I struggle with especially day-to-day is health anxiety. I constantly have paranoia and false perceptions about whats happening to my body, and it feels out of control, as I can't command my body what to do when I feel that something inside me feels wrong. It makes me panic and feel a sense of doom. Whenever I feel this way, I tell myself to look at myself objectively: am I overreacting? Is it really that bad? I'm not actually dying, its just my anxiety trying to protect me. And I start to calm myself down by breathing.
