Insufficient Aid for Refugees

Refugees find themselves sleeping and living in inadequate conditions. Despite the increasing awareness of occurrences in the area, there is insufficient aid from other countries. This suggests that they do not fully support the individuals and rather care for increasing the wealth of the upmost majority. If countries were to fully support the notion of multiculturalism they would be interested in aiding Syrian refugees to migrate to other countries. In actuality, they disregard their struggles, believing that the refugees do not have an innate right to services as the other cultures in that area do.

Mental Health in Refugee Camps

Mental health quality significantly deteriorates in refugees seeking asylum as they relocate from Turkey to Greece. The trauma experienced places them in a vulnerable position. Upon fulfillment of the EU-Turkey agreement, refugees’ mental health has noticeably decreased with the pushback of boats and the increased duration of stay in the overcrowded camps. In this case, the notion of multiculturalism reveals the reverse. Greece refuses to help those seeking asylum due to the overcrowding and overwhelming amount. To ensure the safety of refugees, propositions to deplete the burden must be implemented immediately. This implementation could include the increase in aid from surrounding countries, the increase in support staff to improve medical assistance, and the enactment of new protocols to improve the living conditions of refugees.

Healthcare and Disease in Refugee Camps

In the Greek refugee sites at Lebos Island there are a variety of medical issues and the healthcare provided needs to be tremendously improved. The Greek government has revoked access to public medical care to all asylum seekers and people who have arrived undocumented in Greece. Severely ill children, including those battling life threatening diseases are being deprived of basic health care. One camp refugee states that "In the middle of the night my daughter has seizures and there is no one to help us. I just want to be in a space where my daughter can play like other children and be treated by a good doctor". This situation once again provides evidence that the migration policies generated by the EU-Turkey deal of 2016 are creating unnecessary suffering and putting many lives in danger. Policy makers and Non-Governmental Organizations need to step up, these major healthcare threats. There needs to be urgent and immediate provisions of access to free, timely and adequate healthcare for all asylum seekers unaccompanied minors and undocumented people in Greece.

Lack of Support for Refugees

Refugees in Greece are pleading for help. They live in very precarious conditions, usually with scarce resources and lack of access to basic amenities. This little boy has the words "Save Us" on his back, implying that the situation has gotten so bad that they need to be saved from a place that was supposed to give them refugee from the poor conditions and lack of safety of their home country. Other than the main message of wanting to be saved, this image shows how the refugees are living in a very crowded space and in an unsanitary condition. It is sad to think of the lack of support from the Greek government and the EU, to the extent that children are asking to be saved. The EU tends to have a very positive outlook of multiculturalism, and the organization itself creates opportunities for multiculturalism, however, they do not show the same passion for multiculturalism when it comes to refugees who need assistance and try to deter them.

Living Conditions in Greek Refugee Camps

The living conditions of the refugees on the Greek Islands are horrifying and inhuman. As refugees are living among trash, debris, and feces these conditions are extremely unsanitary and can result in many serious health risks and concerns. The reason refugees don't just leave and go to a new country or camp is because of the containment policy, which hinders them from moving because of seeking asylum within the EU. Resulting in the rise of tension between the locals, refugees, and the officers as all these individuals are only fighting for what they believe in. This conflict among groups is created by the refuge migration crisis is reversing the integration and cohesiveness of multiculturalism. As learned in lecture multiculturalism is the alignment and integration of cultural groups within society. These forms of multiculturalism can be seen within the acceptance of heritage and culture on a vastly different spectrum depending on the person or group. This social cohesion of cultural groups is beginning to reverse itself within the Greek islands as the tension and overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and fear is only growing stronger within cultural groups being affected by this refugee crisis.

Refugee Camps in Lesbos, Greece

After a horrific fire at the Moria campsite in Lesbos, Greece, many were left destitute and homeless. The camp at the time was already overcrowded and had conditions that were in violation of human rights and below EU legal standards. Due to this tragic event, many asylum seekers and refugees were relocated to camps such as Pipka, Kara Tepe and mainly the Mavrovouni camp. Furthermore, COVID-19 hit and many were left even more vulnerable. The decision of the Greek government to close the two smaller camps and keep one large campsite open in order to gather the refugee population is confusing and contributes to even more overcrowding as well as heightens the risk of worsening physical and mental health. Here, the implementation of multiculturalism is perhaps reversed as the government is not helping and considering the refugees and asylum seekers the same as the rest of the population, but is rather locating their resources first to "their" own population and then the refugees.

After more than 1 million immigrants new policies emerged in order to build more mosques to accommodate the newcomers, that policy was met with resistance as many Greeks believe that being part of the Greek orthodox faith is an essential part of being “Greek”. Greece has seen economic adversities in the last decade and that does not help with the tension that is present with the new immigrants. After polls in 2017 only about 36% of the Greek population had positive feelings towards the work Muslim (232), which shows that most of the population is not comfortable with the multicultural context that they find themselves in.
