There were three types of camps, work camps, death camps ,and a combination of the two. One example of this was Auschwitz. A description of this is given by the site Ushmm, "The Auschwitz concentration camp complex was the largest of its kind established by the Nazi regime. It included three main camps, all of which deployed incarcerated prisoners at forced labor. One of them also functioned for an extended period as a killing center."

Another reason was so it would bring attention to a jew, which would cause them to be treated like pigs (to say the least).
