the early years

jongin was a local of dandelion, his family dating their roots in the small town for a few generations. his father was an architect that commuted to the city, enjoying the safety and friendly atmosphere that the town could provide for his children. his mother was a pediatrician, knowing nearly every kid in the town. in the early years, things were simple and only went upwards for the kim family. when his father was promoted to work for the company’s los angeles branch, it was a no-brainer.

9: the downfalls and new beginnings

it would only be the beginning of the end for the kim family. the kids struggled to adjust to their new lives, everyone having their own coping methods. his oldest sister ran with a rough crowd. his other sister plunged herself in school. for nine year old jongin, he remembered being lost.

he had two saving graces: trips back to dandelion and karting.

he thrived during those trips, spending months with his grandparents who had time to watch him. he cherished those times of working with his grandfather, running through the dandelion fields, and entertaining the town’s elderly as they fed him snacks. it was during that time too he met his first love, an older girl that would occasionally babysit him. they would eat ice cream together in front of the store, chatting about everything and nothing. she was one of the few people he would listen to, aside from dandelion’s elderly, who he became like a honorary grandson to. she would become the one for him. she would be the girl that set the standard of every woman for him. first love was cruel, especially an unrequited one starting at a young age.

karting was his other great love that soon turned into racing. while in la, his uncle, a mechanic and former racer, would take the little boy go karting as a way to blow steam. however, people starting noticing his potential on the track. eventually jongin started competing in karting, an expensive sport, but it finally brought the kid out of his shell. jongin’s uncle had a tradition to take him to different races, one of the first being the united states grand prix in indianapolis. it was these wins and trips that made him realize his dreams, he wanted to be a formula 1 driver. not just any driver, but a world champion and the first korea has ever seen.

14: the return to dandelion

things seemed to go well until he was fourteen. his oldest sister was picked up by the police. his parents started spending less time together, fighting whenever they saw one another. jongin’s accident in a race seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, despite having no injuries. his parents finally agreed to one thing: the family should move back to dandelion. however, the decision was sudden and they realized that the kids would have to go without them, then they would follow a few months later.

when the six month mark arrived, there still seemed to be no progress for the parents’ move. jongin was antsy, barely convincing his parents to letting him race once again. however, they were not the same, but his only plus was finding a sponsor, han minsoo. the old man loved racing, only had daughters, and a lot of money. like jongin’s uncle, han saw the potential in the kid. eventually he became like a father figure to jongin.

15: the move

it was another six months later, his parents announced that they were getting his divorce. his father was also engaged again and had another son along the way. he was sick and tired of not having control of his life, knowing that he could improve and win.

despite being fifteen years old, he vanished with the help of han minsoo. he moved to the uk and competed in the british formula ford championship. it was that win that eventually led to him winning second place in the formula ford eurocup. from there, he competed in formula 3.

18: back to korea, military enlistment

his f3 career was put to a halt at eighteen. he went back to korea to get his military enlistment over with. it was during that time he reconnected with everyone that he left. however, this slow pace in life did not last long, immediately returning back to london and the racing scene.

20: f3 and mercedes

despite his absence, it did not dent his performance. as if it was nothing, he pulling his way back on top of the f3 leaderboard. around that time too he was welcomed into the mercedes junior team, cementing his rising stardom within the racing world.

it was at 22, he would eventually win the british formula 3 championship. a year later, he would win 3rd in the formula renault 3.5 series.

23: f1

after testing for mercedes, he was brought on as the team's test and reserve driver. however, it would not last long after an accident for one of the group's drivers prompted jongin to finish the remainder of the season. other teams offered him a spot on their teams, a chance to start rather than an uncertain future with mercedes and remain there as a reserve driver. however, he turned them all down. he knew that his turn was coming up soon.

it was that performance and his loyalty that eventually confirmed him for mercedes' following season, landing the newly vacant spot on the team. he would eventually win first at races like silverstone and baku, but his favorite being the coveted monaco grand prix. while not instantaneous, he would eventually win the world championship title at 27.

with the success in his career, it allowed him times to return to dandelion. he was one of the locals in a way, if you count him speeding his way through the streets even in a bicycle. he rarely went back to the us, where his father and the new family was.

he would be one to push to the limit. even if he had punctured tires or collisions, he would not let that stop him from finishing a race. he would race on until the car could go no further, sometimes his team telling him that he would push his luck too far at times.

28: the downfall

28 was supposed to be his time. he got engaged and even entertained the thoughts of starting his own family, but it was useless to enjoy such pleasures.

during the beginning of the season, he collided with another driver. that collision caused him and his car to lunge towards a barrier. he only said one word in that split second:

shit.

never before had he said such words, usually brushing off past collisions so he could finish the race. however, the vehicle split into two and was on fire. it was in that moment, unable to lift himself out, he almost accepted his fate and sat in his seat. however, he remembered his fiancee and family.

he had to get out.

with an urgency, he did all he could to get the hell out of there. luckily, the halo of the car took most of the brunt and the helmet blocked most of the smoke. physically he only emerged out of there with second degree burns and a broken rib. those seemed like a miracle to what was seen.

mentally, he was a different story.

after the crash and for the remainder of the season, jongin moved back to dandelion for recovery and to spend time with his family. however, he threw himself too soon back into racing, only to realize he had a bigger problem. there would always be a creeping fear whenever he stepped into the driver's seat, he started to second guess his techniques, and it eventually showed during his training sessions. overdone braking and misjudgment on overtaking his competitors, just some of the rookie mistakes he was making.

at home, he was not the same man everyone. while once a jolly daredevil, he would explode without a reason. drinking was becoming too common. he thought about the future, what could he do now? he knew only racing. nothing seemed to satisfy him.

eventually his fiancee left him. his team manager flew down to take a look at the mess the korean racer was, but it wasn't over. it was a risk, but he and han minsoo would help jongin get back to who he once was. jongin was a loyal foundation to the team that still had potential. now he is slowly recovering, making his steps and hopefully making his return to the upcoming season.

when he's in dandelion and not practicing, he can be seen at his uncle's new garage in town. there the two enjoy working on restomods.

it was supposed to be the best day of her life. jongin could not shaking his leg and constantly touching his pocket that morning. out of excitement, he just had to. he proposed to his girlfriend just minutes before the race, promising her a proper celebration later that night. however, that would never happen. a few laps into the race, jongin got into the accident that would change everything for them.

while it was a miracle that he was alive, things were not the same between them. they both returned to dandelion not too long after the accident, hoping that he would make a recovery. however, he went into a dark hole with constant drinking and fighting. eventually she left, unable to handle him.

muse a's grandparents have been jongin's sponsors since the start of his career. despite the labels on their relationship, there is nothing sexual between them. rather the couple are patrons of the arts and see him like a son, his grit reminding them of they were once like at his age. in some ways, this is one of jongin's healthiest relationship. aside from the fact that he has been secretly fucking their granddaughter for some time and the two don't have any plans to stop.
