The biological pathway for each STI is different. Particularity, the transmission of HIV starts with exposure through sexual contact like anal, vaginal, and oral sex. If a person is HIV-positive only certain bodily fluids contain enough of the virus to transmit it. These bodily fluids are semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluid, and blood. After a person comes in contact with one or more of these fluids the HIV infection still has to go through a few more steps to fully infect a human.

Once the virus successfully enters the body it must fight to get past the body's immune cells. Immune cells can be known as CD4 or T-helper cells. If these CD4 cells are infected by HIV and they replicate and kill the infection slower than the infection occurs; the virus will spread. With the HIV infection spreading and the T-helper cells failing to control it the infection can become permanent.

The symptoms of each STI have similarities and differences. For example, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia both express abnormal discharge, a burning sensation while urinating, pain during sex, and sometimes these STIs do not express any symptoms. Different from the other STI mentioned Gonorrhea causes urethral damage and pelvic inflammatory disease (PIV). Chlamydia can cause permanent damage to the reproductive system. HIV does not have many symptoms other than flu-like symptoms a few weeks after contracting the virus. After HIV progresses into AIDS there are more obviously symptoms like weight loss, fever, fatigue, recurring infections, and in some cases death.
