on August 9, 1945 the dropping of the Nagasaki bomb led to the surrender of Japan. An atomic bomb named "Fat Man" was transported by B-29 named Bockscar under the command of Major Charles W Sweeney. The 10,000 pound plutonium-based bomb took off from Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands towards the town of Kokura, where Japanese weapons were located. Kokura became the target of the replacement bombing of Kyoto. However, the cloud-covered Kokura area made Bockscar change direction towards the second target, Nagasaki. "Fat Man" shot down 1,650 feet over Nagasaki City at 11:02 a.m. This atomic bomb produced an explosive power equivalent to 22,000 tons of TNT, greater than the explosive power of "Little Boy" in Hiroshima, which was equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT. As a result, around 60,000 to 80,000 people died. This number is half of Nagasaki's population.
