the film ends in an equilibrium. we know this because the closing sequence is very similar to the opening sequence showing us that the narrative has been through the dystopia stage. in the sequence Shaun yawns just the same as the beginning showing that his life has gotten back to his routine. Also the first thing he does is return to the gaming console with ed, just like before the zombie outbreak. Liz also talks about going to the pub. Shaun also lives in the same flat he did at the beginning with the exception of Liz now living with him.

The view that we get of Shaun's shared house in the opening scene is a huge contrast to the closing sequence. Shaun's house is messy, unorganized and is a visual representation of how he can't accept responsibility and take on an adult role and leave his university life behind him. In the closing scene, we see a much more domesticated version of Shaun, the version that Liz stressed that she wanted throughout the film. The house portrays an opposite side to Shaun, a much more mature Shaun who takes on responsibility and we can tell this by the clean and organised version of the house. Representing the difference in Shaun's life as it symbolizes he's taken more of a responsible role on and it also represents a peaceful side to his life now that Z-Day is over.

Zombies - costume and make up

Compared to the rest of the film where the zombies are dressed in ragged, dirty and blood stained clothes, in this closing sequence, they are shown to be wearing new ones. For example, we see a scene where one is portrayed in a fresh new work uniform and another where some have been given a set of clothes for a TV show. Before, their clothes were dull and darkly coloured whereas now, their clothes are vibrant which connotes the idea that the zombies tendency to kill and eat human flesh has slowly but surely died down, they have developed to withstand this desire. Whilst their costumes have been altered, their make up has consistently stayed the same, implying that although some changes have been made, they are still zombies at heart and that part of them can never disappear. However, we can infer that 6 months on from Z-Day, the general public has learned to accept the company of zombies - normalising their existence by making them work alongside humans as well as using them as a form of entertainment. By taking this into consideration, we can argue that the zombies are being exploited. Due to the obvious fact that the zombies are incapable of feeling emotions and thinking for themselves, it is easy for the humans to take advantage of this and use it to their benefit because they are unable to resist .

By watching the full film the audience is aware that most of this film was told with a restricted narrative. Despite there are flash-forwards in this film with Shaun's plan, the viewer is seeing this story being told through Shaun's eyes. We get jump-scares simultaneously that Shaun gets throughout this film and at the end of this film we cannot see any more than what Shaun can see to the extent that we can only see the army coming to the rescue when Shaun and Liz turn around revealing the audience to their visuals as the camera follows Shaun's parable.

Rather than the viewer being told an omniscient narrative which may spoil the ending as this is something that has been built up, the use of keeping the story unknown the the viewer but known to Shaun is so we can see Shaun's reactions along with the plot as that is the main focus throughout this film.

Significance of the TV clips

Just like we have seen many times in Shaun of the Dead, Edgar Wright uses sound (on and off screen) to allow the spectator to piece together the narrative. For example, in the closing sequence, Liz is watching TV, presumably waiting for Shaun to wake up and to start their day together. If we apply Todorov's narrative theory to this segment of the film, we see and hear clips and snippets from news and reality TV shows to explain what the character's new equilibrium is like after "Z-Day", as the news roll reveals to the audience. We also see this similar technique used in Trainspotting. Danny Boyle utilizes the same technique in Renton's cold turkey scene, with Dale Winton's game show to suggest Renton's erratic mental state. Similarly, in Shaun of the Dead's closing scene, we see what looks like a documentary called "Zombies from Hell" and even popular host Vernon Kay alongside Coldplay talking about Zombaid on a chat show. Along with other aspects of the TV clips, the film puts forward an ideology on how we deal with tragedy in our society. Zomb-aid could be a reference to the likes of Children in Need and Comic Relief; an example of how we feel the need to raise money and awareness for the disadvantaged through big events and charities. Alternatively, the last two clips are interesting. We see a segment from Trisha and a show resembling Total Wipeout. Reality TV is known for creating a representation regarding "the other" when it comes to the working classes. They are represented as unattractive and low on the socio-economic scale. Arguably, the zombies in these two shows are similarly shown to the spectator and characters in the film in a similar way. Therefore, we could argue that the film puts forward an ideology that symbolizes how we see the zombies post-Z Day is similar to how we see the working classes within the media.

the song quotes 'you're making me live'- contrasts the idea that even though Ed is a zombie, he is still treating him as if he was 'alive' by playing video games and talking to him.
Even though Shaun still takes the time out of his day to play video games with Ed, he is no longer affecting Liz and Shaun's relationship as much, as they have moved in together. This is noticeable as you can see through how the house has changed, it no longer looks as if it is Ed's stop out, not only is it no longer full of rubbish, it has also had Liz's or a 'woman's touch' as it is much brighter and cleaner. these bright colours also reflect on their relationship and life as everything has improved after 'Z day'.

As they are being raised up through the basement doors, it looks as if they are being loaded into a video game, which is a strong theme throughout. it is also similar to the hunger games in which they are raised onto podiums into a 'battleground' in a game of survival of the fittest, which is the case with humans versus zombies.

The significance of Mise-En-Scene in Shaun and Liz's new living space

Their house is show to be clean. With the use of restricted narration, we only see what makes up the mise-en-scene when Shaun stumbles in zombie-like again. It is a long shot with Liz sat on the sofa, fitting in with the new found decor. If we compare this to the opening scene's mise-en-scene, Ed and Shaun's living space was nowhere near this clean and doesn't look as cozy. This suggests to the spectator that now Ed has gone, and him and Liz are cohabiting, Shaun has dropped his university way of living and has became more in tune with life. With the use of natural lighting, the scene is well lit. This symbolizes a change in Shaun's motivation and suggests that it is on the rise with Liz as a positive addition to his new found adulthood. He is asking her what the plans are, adventuring out into two sugars... Liz even picks up on that in a comedic moment. This new equilibrium suggests that Shaun and Liz's routine is different. Arguably, this follows Todorov's narrative structure by introducing a different, but similar, way of living for the characters in the diegesis. For example, Shaun is still fumbling into his living room and his feet are even still shot in a close up. However, instead of conventional horror sound effects we hear off screen sounds of Liz watching the TV. She has successfully made changes to Shaun's life.

However, when Shaun ventures out into the shed to find zombie Ed still doing his routine, the lighting changes back to lowkey. This may suggest to the spectator that even though Shaun, the not typical but Proppian hero, has gotten his princess and the lifestyle that followed, he can still indulge in his old equilibrium. Despite that, we do see some changes in Ed. Clearly he is a zombie, but is he really that different? He is still a shell - playing video games and passively consuming. Shaun seems content with his best friend still being able to play video games. The off screen sound "player 2 entered the game" is something we saw in the previous opening sequence, which symbolizes his indulgence in the past despite having a new, motivated life

One would say that this is exploiting the zombies and they could symbolize slaves because the zombies are put through the same king of exploitation for the relief of capitalists- the zombie worker at Asda.
Some of the retail workers we see at the start of the movie we are met with again- but as zombies. It could be argued that the retail workers were being put through the same kind of exploitation even as humans; for the capitalist gain due to unfair hours and low minimum wage.

In the first image, the coffee table is very simple and seems much cheaper, however in the final image there is more detail and seems to be made of a more expensive type of wood. This not only represents how Liz has improved Shaun, showing attention to detail, but also how they seem to be thankful for the small things after what had happened to everyone and everything around them, also paying attention to detail.
This scene may also be seen as a coming of age film as it shows how Shaun has grown up - a full bookshelf in the background, as if he is more educated just by the lack of Ed and the more we see of Liz. - is Ed becoming a Zombie truly a negative or positive?

The song "You're My Best Friend" by Queen is featured in the end credits of the movie. We see this partly as a tribute to Shaun and Ed's friendship, but the lines "Ooh, you make me live", "I've been with you such a long time, you're my sunshine" and "In rain or shine, you've stood by me girl" could also be a tribute to Shaun and Liz's relationship. Due to her influence and causing him to make changes, Liz has quite literally made him live actively instead of passively. This British classic could be reference to Liz's empowerment, even she says in the opening sequence "I want you to want to do it too", which is an over-complicated sentence for comedic effect. And, as shown in the end sequence and the rolling credit's non-digetic music, she has succeeded in making him grasp life, despite sneaking into the shed to see zombie Ed. Too bad it took a huge disruption like a zombie apocalypse to make Shaun see life from a different perspective

Editing techniques - the saving the day scene vs Shaun and Liz's house

In the saving the day scene we see editing techniques that are utilized throughout the film, ellipsis editing and montage with crash zooms and pans. This is conventional of horror films to give it a fast pace, to build adrenaline within the spectator. This is may what fans of horror (or more specifically zombie horror for Shaun of the Dead) would have been expecting, along with the guns in the military's entrance during the climax. In contrast, the editing techniques in Shaun and Liz's house is more of a slow pace. Almost a return to reality from Z-Day
