         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Turkey has high solar energy potential due to its geographical location.<br><br></div><div><br>According to the Solar Energy Map (SEM) of Turkey prepared by the Renewable Energy General Directorate, it has been determined that the total annual insolation time is 2.741 hours (a total of 7,5 hours per day), and the total solar energy derived per year is 1.527 kWh/m<sup>2</sup> per year (total 4,18 kWh/m<sup>2</sup> per day). While solar energy technologies are extremely varied in terms of their methods, materials and technological levels, they can be split into two principal groups: <br><br><strong>Photo-emissive Solar Technologies and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP):</strong>In this system heat is obtained from solar energy, and can be used either directly or in the generation of electricity.<br><br></div><div><strong><br>Solar Cells:</strong>Semi-conducting materials, which are also known as photovoltaic solar energy systems, convert the sunlight directly into electricity.<br><br></div><div><br>The total established solar collector area within our country as of 2017 was calculated as being close to 20.000.000 m<sup>2</sup>. Also, in 2017, close to 823.000 TEP Tonnes Equivalent to Petrol) heat energy was produced using solar collectors.<br><br></div><div><br>As of the end of 2017, there were 3.616 solar power plants with a total installed capacity of 3.421 MW. This is the equivalent of 4% of the total potential. In 2017, electricity production based on solar energy have realized 2.684 GWh and 0,91% of our electricity production was obtained from solar energy.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Wind comes about from the varied temperatures created by solar radiation on the surface of the earth. These different temperatures cause humidity and pressure levels to vary as well, and the difference in the pressure levels causes the air to move. Approximately 2% of the solar energy which reaches the earth is converted into wind energy.<br><br></div><div><br>The characteristics of the wind differs (in respect of time and region), based on local geographic differences and the non-homogenous temperatures of the surface of the earth. Wind is stated as two separate parameters – speed and direction. The speed of the wind rises with height, and its theoretical strength changes proportionately to its cubic speed. The initial investment costs of wind energy applications are high, and their capacity factors are low. Together with this, they have the disadvantage of inconsistent energy production. Their advantages, on the other hand, can be listed as follows:<br><br></div><ul><li>In plentiful and free supply within the atmosphere;</li><li>It is a renewable and clean source of energy, and is environmentally friendly;</li><li>Its source is reliable, and there are no risks of running out or prices increasing over time;</li><li>Its cost has reached the level where it is able to compete with the power plants of today;</li><li>Maintenance and repair costs are low;</li><li>Its raw materials are completely domestic, and it does not create a dependence on imports;</li><li>The installation and operation of its technology is relatively simple;</li><li>It can be taken into operation within a short time.</li></ul><div><em>Wind turbines are the principal structural elements of wind energy plants, and are machines which convert the kinetic energy of the moving air, first of all to mechanic energy, and then to electricity energy.<br></em><br></div><div><br>Wind turbines can be manufactured either with a horizontal or a vertical axis, based on the direction of their rotational axis. Wind turbines with a horizontal axis are more widely used.<br><br></div><div><br>Wind turbines are only able to start generating electricity energy at a specific wind speed. A wind turbine will generate energy in between the cut-in and cut-out speeds. The cut-in speeds of modern wind turbines are between 2-4 m/s, their nominal speeds are between 10-15 m/s, and their cut out speeds are between 25-35 m/s. Each wind turbine reaches the maximum power value which can be obtained from the system at a specific wind speed. This maximum power is known as nominal power and the wind speed at this level is known as the nominal speed. Wind turbines automatically stop after a certain wind speed has been exceeded, in order to ensure that the system is not damaged. This maximum speed is known as the system cut-out speed.<br><br></div><div><br>The body possesses sound insulation in order to prevent noise pollution. The towers are built in the form of cages or pipes. As the towers can be very high, the constructions outside the cage towers can consist of two or three parts.<br><br></div><div><br>It has been accepted that wind plants with a capacity of 5 MW can be established in Turkey at heights of 50 meters above ground level, and in areas with a wind speed exceeding 7.5 m/s. In the light of this acceptance, a Potential Wind Energy Map (PWEM) has been prepared, where the source wind details obtained using a mid-scale weather forecast model and micro-scale wind flow model are given. The wind energy potential of Turkey has been estimated as 48.000 MW. The total area which is equivalent to this potential is just 1.30% of the total surface area of Turkey.<br><br></div><div><em>As of the end of 2017, there were 207 wind energy plants, with a total installed capacity of 6.516 MW. This is the equivalent of 7,6% of the total potential. In 2017, electricity production from wind energy have realized 17.909 GWh and 6,06% of our electricity production was obtained from wind energy.<br></em><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Among the various sources of energy, hydroelectricity power stations are preferred due to their being environmentally friendly and carrying low potential risk.<br><br></div><div><br>Hydroelectricity plants work in harmony with the environment, are clean, renewable, and highly productive plants with no fuel expenses. They take on the role of an insurance in energy prices, have a long lifespan, low operating costs, and are not dependent on imports.<br><br></div><div><em>The theoretical hydroelectricity potential of our country is 1% of theoretical potential of the world, while its economic potential is 16% of the economic potential of Europe.<br></em><br></div><div><br>Our hydraulic resources, which hold the most important position in the renewable energy potential of our country, possess a hydroelectricity potential of 433 billion kWh, while the technically usable potential is 216 kWh, and the economic hydroelectricity potential is 140 billion kWh/year.<br><br></div><div><br>As of the end of 2017, there were 628 hydropower plants, with a total installed capacity of 27.273 MW. This is the equivalent of 32% of the total potential. In 2017, hydroelectricity production have realized 58,5 billion kWh and 19,8% of our electricity production was obtained from hydropower.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Geothermal Energy in Turkey</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Geothermal energy is the heat energy obtained from the hot water, steam, dry steam and hot dry rocks by artificial methods, which have gathered within rocks in the depths underneath the soil, and have moved and were stored by the fluid heat.<br><br></div><div><br>Turkey is located on an active tectonic zone as geological and geographical location, and for this reason our country is rich in terms of geothermal energy resources. Our country have approximately 1.000 geothermal springs that located all over the country that have various of temperatures.<br><br></div><div><br>In theory, the geothermal capacity of our country is predicted as 31.500 MWt. 78% of these geothermal fields are situated in Western Anatolia, 9 in Central Anatolia, 7% in the Marmara Region, 5% in Eastern Anatolia and 1% in the other regions. 90% of our geothermal resources are low and medium enthalphied Geothermal areas which are suitable for direct applications (heating, thermal tourism, the output of minerals, etc.), while 10% are suitable for indirect applications (generation of electricity).<br><br></div><div><br>In 2005, with the support of our ministry, the development of existing geothermal resources initiated and began to search for new potential areas. Due for this mobilization, our usable geothermal heat capacity increased with total 223.000 meter drillings and additional 1.900 MWt heat energy increase was provided. Also, discovered geothermal fields reached to 234 fields. As a result of total of 613 drillings with total of 383.000 meters of depth carried out to this day, 5.000 MWt of heat energy was obtained including natural outflows.<br><br></div><div><br>In 2005, with the support of our ministry, the development of existing geothermal resources initiated and began to search for new potential areas. Due for this mobilization, our usable geothermal heat capacity increased with total 225.000 meter drillings. With MTA’s drilling activities, 173 discovered geothermal fields reached to 237 fields which 10 of them are suitable for electricity production. By the end of 2017, total of 618 drillings with total of 392,000 meters of depth performed by MTA and approximately 5000 MWt of heat energy (including natural springs) obtained from these wells. In 2017, the country's total geothermal heat capacity (visible amount of heat) reached to 15.500 MWt.<br><br></div><div><br>As of the end of 2017, there were 40 geothermal power plants with a total installed capacity of 1.064 MW. This is the equivalent of 1,2% of the total potential. In 2017, electricity production based on geothermal energy have realized 5.970 GWh and 2,02% of our electricity production was obtained from geothermal energy.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>The gross electricity consumption in Turkey in 2017 was 294,9 billion kWh. Also, it was 121,7 billion kWh by the end of May 2018.<br><br></div><div><br>According to the highly probable scenario of an increase of 4,8% to 385 TWh in the base scenario, electricity consumption in the year 2023 is expected to rise by 5,5% to 357,4 TWh. By the end of the 2017, power plants containing a total of 8.568,1 MW additional capacity were added to the system, and as of the end of the 2017 our capacity has risen to around 85.200 MW. As of the end of 2017, 37% of our electricity production was obtained from natural gas, 33% from coal, 20% from hydropower 6% from wind, 2% from geothermal and 2% from other sources.<br><br></div><div><br>As of the end of 2017, EUAS ( State Electricity Generating Company) had a share of 23,4 % in installed capacity of Turkey, 61,4% of the private sector, 7,2% of build-operate plants, 1,6% of build-operate-transfer plants and 4,3% of unlicensed power plants.<br><br></div><div><br>By the end of 2017, the distribution of our installed power by resources; 32,0% hydraulic, 27,2% naturel gas, 21,9% coal, 7,6% wind, 1,2% geothermal, 5,9% other sources.<br><br></div><div><br>In addition, as of the end of 2017, number of electricity energy production plants in our country have been 5.021. According to energy sources, number of existing plants is as follows:<br><br></div><ul><li>628 hydraulic</li><li>41 coal</li><li>207 wind</li><li>40 geothermal</li><li>286 natural gas</li><li>3.616 solar</li><li>203 otherpower plants</li></ul><div><br>Our electricity infrastructure strengthened in our country and the production increase in parallel with the increase in consumption was recorded. In addition, The connection of our electricity system with the European electricity system has also been strengthened. Long Term Agreement was signed between TEIAS and ENTSO-E on April 15, 2015. By this way, our country's electricity system has been permanently connected to the European electricity system. TEIAS also became the first and only observer member of ENTSO-E with the observer membership agreement on 14 January 2016.<br><br></div><div><br>In line with the aim of liberalising the electricity market, it has been set forth that new generation investments be carried out by the private sector, in accordance with the new Electricity Market Legislation numbered 6446.<br><br></div><div><br>It is aimed that a transparent and competitive market be formed in the electricity sector, and that the environment for investment be developed in this way. Within this scope, EPIAS (Electricity Markets Operating Corporation) has been established and started its operations.<br><br></div>]]></description>
