Dairy Queen: Additional Research

Wikipedia.org
Dairy Queen is owned by International Dairy Queen Inc. This company also owns Orange Julius and Karmelkorn. This fast food restaurant was founded 77 years ago on June 22, 1940. Its founders are Henry Derry and Joseph Queen. The first location was in Joliet, Illinois, US. There are currently 4800 locations in the United States. It has very prominent key people involved in the business such as Warren Buffett. Dairy Queen had a 2009 revenue of 2 billion. The restaurant serves fast food and ice cream desserts. Dairy Queen is known for its soft serve ice cream which has a long history with its customers. The soft serve formula was firsrt developed in 1938 by “Grandpa” McCullough and his son Alex.
These two convinced an ice cream store owner to serve it and on the first day of sales they sold more than 1600 servings. Since the 1940s, Dairy Quenn has used a franchise system to expand. They are now a global operation. In 2014, there were stores in more than 25 countries. Dairy Queen is one of the first for food franchising. The franchise was so popular it expanded its 10 stores in 1941 to 100 by 1947.
Dairy Queen is known as a fixture of social life in small towns. They have been referenced as a symbol of life in America. Since it is a franchise, the advertising is consistent. The ads and commercials are handling by a marketing firm. The logo has undergone several changes throughout the years but it has always been the same for every Dairy Queen. It is a symbol that is easily recognized.
Sources: Otis, Caroline Hall;Mundale, Susan (1990). The Cone with the Curl on Top: Celebrating Fifty Years 1940-1990: The Dairy Queen Story.
Hinton, S.E. (1967). The Outsiders. New York: Viking Press.
Strengths:
A reputable company
Has been established and earning money for many years
Name recognition
Marketing and advertising is handled by corporate.
There Is a benefit to becoming part of this franchise. It is nationally and globally well known. It has consistent food and menus. What has made Dairy Queen a success has been formulated by the franchise based on their years of experiences. Warren Buffet, one of Americas wealthiest believes in it and that is a good testament of its stability.

If you are someone that someone that doesn’t like to follow rules of others, then a franchise may not be a good idea. The décor, menu, hours, uniforms, have all been established by the franchise and is not subject to change. It is important that the restaurants continue with the same design and menu so customers know what to expect.

Also, a franchise can initially cost a lot of money as an owner will have to pay for the experience and knowledge of the franchise. If you do not have a lot of money to start a business, you may want to consider opening your own.

I like the franchise concept. Even though it may take more start up money, people are instantly aware of what you are opening. As mentioned in the research, Dairy Queen has been around for decades and has become known as part of America history. The food comes from the same distribution so that it remains consistent. The grills, fryers, ovens and soft serve ice cream makers have been ordered in bulk as the rest of the Dairy Queen restaurants. A new store owner would not have to create a new menu that everyone enjoys as most AMercians are familiar with the Dairy Queen menu. Also, the menus, drive thru signs and the marketing materials have already been created by the design team for Dairy Queen. The interior look of the store as well as building plans for the outside are supplied by the franchise which simplifies the process.

Since it is important for all of the Diary Queens to be the same, the uniforms for the employees have also been made and a new owner would just have to order them instead of coming up with his own. Dairy Queen has the formula for success which comes from the purchase into a franchise.

Challenges to becoming paret of a franchise may be that the franchise can deny the location that you wish to locate. It may be too close to another franchise Dairy Queen so you will have to agree to that. Another challenge may be that you wish to serve your grandmothers apple pie in the restaurant but if you are in the Dairy Queen franchise you can not do this. You would have to follow their menu guidelines.

The franchise fee for a Dairy Queen restaurant is $25,000 to $35,000. While you could be making from$382,000 to $1.8 million on your restaurant, you would still be paying a 4-5 % royalty on gross monthly receipts to the company.
