Nano was inspired by here sisters actions to make a change. In fact while being educated in France nano and her sister saw the troubles of the poor. Therefore when they returned back to live with their mother in Dublin they could see where poverty had spread in Ireland as well. Nano heard that her sister Ann gave a valuable piece of silk to a troubled family it had her thinking about what she could do to aid the poor. This wish sent her back to France to follow her calling by praying for the poor as a member of a religious order. While she was there, a spiritual director recommended her to return to Ireland and teach the children in poverty

Nano travelled from Dublin back to Cork where her brother lived; it was here she set up her first school for the poor which was inspired by a building in France. It was there in a rented cabin in Cove Lane in complete secrecy she taught 30 children from the poorest of the poor, which within a year she had 5 school for girls, and 2 for boys with two hundred children in total. By 1784, before her death she had a chain of schools running in the city, with 7 parishes holding over four hundred pupils. She used her own inheritance from the death of her uncle to support the schools, bur when the supply of money ran out she became a beggar on the streets receiving donations. For her schools to be more professional she brought over the ursuline sisters from France to teach by her side. As this occurred it was not what nano was hoping, so she set up her own religious sisters under a structure to educate the poor.

On Christmas of 1775 “The sister of charitable instruction of the sacred heart of Jesus” was formed. This was later called the “presentation sisters of the blessed virgin Mary” which still runs today. Two years before her death in 1782 a law was passed which allowed Catholics to open up their first school since 1695. Her school emerged from a state of secrecy as her vision became reality. Her education system laid foundations and inspired many others to go out and teach others. Nano was Voted Irish Woman of the Millennium in 2000, she has a place in may people of Ireland's heart as the "Lady With The Lamp" an things would be very different without her .

Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Matthew 18:10-14 New International Version (NIV)

The Parable of the Wandering Sheep

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. [11] [a]

12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

The parable of “The Lost Sheep” is found in the Gospel of Luke and Matthew. Parables are stories used to show of a moral or spiritual lesson, told by Jesus in the gospels throughout the Bible. The parables in each of the gospel are told differently by Jesus to the people of the time.

Nano Nagle’s actions were somewhat similar to those of Jesus at the time.
