Before venturing into what is now localized as the Straight of Messina, between the eastern tip of Sicily and the western tip of Calabria in Southern Italy, being infamously narrow with strong currents. Circe warned him that he would have to choose either Scylla, a monster that would kill 6 of his men, regardless of what he did, or risk loosing the entire boat to Charybdis, a dangerous whirlpool that could suck the boat to the bottom of the sea. This extremely tough decision gave rise to the expression, "torn between Scylla and Charybdis," or, more commonly, "stuck between a rock and a hard place." Odysseus chose this, but after getting stranded on his boat, it floated near Charybdis, was swallowed while Odysseus clung to a tree growing on a cliff, and was expelled again, which allowed him to paddle to shore.  Less known, however, are Charybdis's origins, which stem from two stories- one was that she was the daughter of Poseidon and helped her father claim territory on the coasts, swallowing islands and shore to expand the kingdom of the sea god. Zeus, her father's rival, punished her by capturing her and chaining her to a rock on the bottom of the ocean, and then transformed her into a hideous, bladder-like monster with tentacles for limbs and cursed her to have a terrible thirst for salty sea water, which she tried to quench three times a day by swallowing enormous amounts of ocean, creating a dangerous whirlpool that was capable of wrecking boats. There's a story about Aesop telling a fisherman about it, saying that with each suck, vast amounts of land previously hidden by the ocean were revealed, which also seems to capstone the curse. They are the goddesses of old age, born with their iconic elderly features from the primordial, monstrous sea gods Ceto and Phorcys. Their names, Deino, Enyo, and Pemphredo, mean dread, horror, and alarm. The Grey Sisters were encountered by Perseus in his forced quest to find and slay the gorgon Medusa, where, under the advice of Hermes and Athena, obtained several critical magical items to help him succeed in his quest by stealing the eye and tooth and not giving them back until they provided him with the objects. In regard to modern day, the Graeae were one of the earliest examples of the hag, the prevailing image that comes to mind in in the topics of witches, in contrary to the seductive sorceresses found elsewhere in Greek myth. Traditionally in Greek myth, they guarded the gold mines of the north in the Rhipaean mountains. A group of one-eyed warriors called the Arismaspians, similar to the cyclops, would ride horses and try to unsuccessfully steal the gold. They became very popular in medieval heraldry, and have been widely regarded as a cool mythical creature for thousands of years and are included in many works of fiction. Tennings range in somber colors from beige to cinnamon to black, not uncommonly in dual colors. They are a strange conglomerate of having the ears of bat-eared fox, the rough paws of a dog or red panda with an opposable thumb that makes it possible to grasp objects, and a general likeness to squirrels. They also have some faculative bipedal abilities and a rare few have basic shaggy wings, a form of atavism. It is unclear where they evolved from, but its mystical basis may stem from Vulpesegriff, it itself a combination of fox and griffin, as well as some clear rodent and humanizing characteristics, the latter of which may be accounted for by the excess of residual magic in their habitats. They are intelligent and generally weary of larger beings, and often will prefer to take shelter in their homes, often the cavities at the base of trees extending upwards, the network of which is prominently expansive throughout the forest region. Originally, there were three of them: Arges, Steropes, and Brontes; capable blacksmiths, these were the sons of Uranus and Gaea and the brothers of the Hecatoncheires and the Titans. They were imprisoned by Cronus but released by his son Zeus, for whom they forged his famous thunderbolt as a sign of gratitude. However, at a later time, poets spoke of a different type of Cyclopes, a race of dim-witted and violent one-eyed shepherds dwelling in the caves of the island of Sicily. The most famous among them was Polyphemus, the Cyclops who fell in love with Galatea and was eventually blinded by Odysseus.  there seems to have been two very different types of Cyclopes in Ancient Greek mythology. Hesiod’s Cyclopes are three gigantic and divine blacksmiths, sons of Uranus and Gaea, residents of Olympus; Homer’s are a race of enormous and violent shepherds related to Poseidon and dwelling in the world of humans. Even though they also had only one eye and were as gigantic as Hesiod’s Cyclopes, Homer’s Cyclopes were neither blacksmiths nor obedient. A child of Typhon and Echidna. Only on three occasions Cerberus was tricked by visitors of Hades: Heracles did it with his strength, Orpheus with his music, and the Sybil of Cumae with a honey-cake. The last and most difficult of the Twelve Labors of Heracles was bringing Cerberus up from the Underworld. Hades allowed this, but only on the condition that Heracles manages to do it without using any weapon. With incredible strength, unfailing protective instincts, and a zero-tolerance policy against evil. Griffins combined the best traits from the eagle and the lion.  Their heads come from the eagle; they are coated in glossy feathers, usually brown or golden, and have dangerous, curved beaks. Two tufts of feathers spring up from their heads, representing a lion’s ears. At their shoulders, a pair of powerful, feathered wings emerge. Behind the wings, the feathers fade into tawny fur, and the lion’s body takes over. These beasts are usually drawn with the front legs of an eagle and the back legs of a lion, but sometimes, all four legs are lion-like.  The griffin is a terrible enemy in a fight, it has all the strength of a lion, and it can launch aerial attacks. Griffin also have an eye for shiny objects, especially gold. It likes to nest in rocky areas where seams of gold can be found, and nuggets of gold can be found scattered around its nest. The first griffins crop up as sculptures in ancient Egypt and Iran, around 3000 BC. Much later, griffons melded into Greek culture. Eventually, the Greeks passed the griffin along to the Romans, who spread its legend throughout Europe. Today, the griffin has been surrendered to the realm of fantasy, but it is still a popular figure there! The hydra typically stayed in the marshes of lLerna near Argos, and often emerged to kill people and livestock in nearby areas. However when one tried to cut off a head of the hydra, they found 2 took its place. Heracles ended up killing the hydra. Accompanied with his nephew, iolaus,.
