Because of the crazy winds, Odysseus and his men are lead to the land of cyclops. But to their detriment, the cyclops were not the nicest species, one cyclops locked them in his cave with a huge stone. So Odysseus and his rowdy crew devised a plan to get him drunk and to plunge a wooden rod into his eye. Odysseus and his men get away riding on the bellies of sheep, Polyphemus puts a curse from Poseidon on them.

This story falls in one of the most important places for the hero's journey. The category that this story falls into would be the supreme ordeal. The reason why it can be considered the supreme ordeal is because Polyphemus eats some of the crew and traps the others for later devourment "He dismembered them and made him his meal, gaping and crunching like a mountain lion." (Homer 989). This was the low point in the story because they thought they were going to be eaten by Polyphemus.

Conflict plays a big part in "The Cyclops", in fact, the main part of the story is an example of conflict. In the climax of the story, Odysseus decides to plunge a hot spike into Polyphemus's eye in order to escape "Straightforward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye." (Homer 992). The cyclops and Odysseus were in a conflict because the cyclops was killing Odysseus's crew by eating them and Odysseus jabbed him in the eye with a hot poker they are in a conflict. The examples of conflict in this story are very important because they portray some of the most important parts of the whole writing.

Characterization

The main Characters in this story are Odysseus and Polyphemus the cyclops. Although the story does not tell us exactly what the characters are like, it does, however, give us little clues as to what the characters are like. The book hints at Odysseus to be a cunning soldier "My name is Nobody: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nobody." (Homer 991). This line is hinting that Odysseus is a genius and that he tricked the cyclops into thinking that his name is nobody. Odysseus is portrayed as a genius at strategy and he likes to play tricks on people or in this case cyclops.
