I think it’s fair because if one athlete was injured sharing the medal would be fair for him. And it’s fair because both of them tried and they both deserved it.

Sometimes, or maybe often, people have done the same road, they passed the same difficulties to manage to achieve something. In some cases, they might help each other to deal with any obstacle they face, too. What is more, doing sth collectively can satisfy more our feelings and show us, also, what it's like when doing, every now and then, something teaming and make us feel that doing something together, every now and then can be more effective.
On the other hand, someone has payed more effort for a dream of his, so he deserves the first place, for the effort he made and score. 
However, I think when two people had made the same score and effort, it doesn't matter who of the two is the best sharing the prize fair and honest, of course, to each other.
