Chopin defies the negative thoughts around women's purity and how it affects women in society. The French women in Chopin's family shared similar views and pushed Chopin to be strong, persistent and refuse to accept sexist views. These powerful and controversial views showed what Chopin wanted for women's equality, including an equal role in The American Dream.

The American Dream is based on making sacrifices and working hard to achieve what you desire. In a scholarly journal Xianfeng Mou says, “she is concerned with representing the emotional, spiritual, and artistic awakening of a female artist battling against prevalent cultural norms of wifehood, motherhood, romance, seduction, and conventions of female writing.” As discussed in this quote, Chopin focuses on the battles women face. She is empowering women to fight these battles even though they might have to make sacrifices and work hard. They might have to sacrifice their image in society if they question their societal roles. Kathleen Streater states in "The Awakening", “Edna chooses suicide rather than a life confined by societal expectations, and her shocking resolution provokes passionate reactions in readers, as extreme acts will do.” Edna makes the most horrific and devastating measure possible in order to avoid the life she did not desire.
