It took them some time to adapt with the new national anthem as it was hard to pronounce the words. They were also forced to learn Japanese subjects in school. All subjects in school were taught in Japanese. It was hard for the teenagers to adapt to the changes as they could not understand Japanese. Some parents resorted to finding a tuition teacher who teaches English or even Mother Tongue to prevent their child from losing out.

There was a shortage of textbooks and most desks and chairs were damaged. Teenagers who did not go to school during the Japanese Occupation were over-aged by the time the war ended.

It was a Japanese cartoon where a boy, who was born in a pumpkin, became the village hero. Then they would also show the current news on screen.

Life still went on in the occupation. We were closer to the sea then, and I would spend time swimming with the other kids as well. The other kids and I, we still played our games and all.

But after the Japanese came, the activities we could do was restricted. We started to climb trees, and played with rubber bands, or we would go the nearby story-telling place to listen to stories.
