Figurative Explanation- Yanek was very scared of Hitler. He did not want to be taken from his family, and he knew this could not be good because Hitler was making speeches on the radio.

Quote- “I shivered when I heard Hitler the German fuehrer, give speeches on the radio,”(Page 3).

Figurative explanation- Yanek was in a truck with many other Jews and he didn’t know what to do. He started panicking and getting very nervous. He tried to find a way out. He has never been in this kind of situation back when he was in Krakow

Quote- “I panicked looking for a way out of the truck, out of Plaszow, out of this nightmare but they already swallowed my parents and everyone I loved,”(Page 63).

quote- “Because we'd missed dinner we were sent to bed without any food we knew better then to complain and most of us went to our beds as quickly as we could.”(page 101)

quote- “I hefted another rock and kept working while I tried not to let the Nazis see how afraid I was. They were like Amon Goeth dogs, they could smell fear on you and they liked nothing better than to attack you when you were your weakest.”(page 106)

quote- Yanek starts in Trzebinia Poland, at the beginning of chapter 16 he gets put on a bus to go somewhere random, and they find another bus going somewhere else. Yanek speaks to the people on the other bus, and they tell Yanek they are going to a death camp. Yanek goes crazy he is a madman he just wants to die.

quote- Yanek travels to Auschwitz death camp he gets picked to work there. After he gets chosen to work there the Nazis get told to send them to Sashenhausen camp to escape from who they were at war with. When they got moved they didn't have any more cattle cars for people to ride in so they had to walk there (it was called the death march) the death march was crucial to people over 250,000 people died.

quote- Yanek wanted to get out and be free from Moon Face. He needed to win this race, so they made all the still-living Jews compete to see who the strongest contenders were. Yanek won this race, and he was getting sent away to work at a new camp.

quote- Yanek needed to get out. He needed to escape Moon Face. Though the food was much better and they went to rest, he wasn't going to survive with Moon Face (a murderer) there. Moon Face was a murderer who was put to be a leader at the camp, he would beat on Yanek and his fellow prisoners.

quote- As soon as Yanek got on the cattle car to go to gross Rosen he was so used to seeing the death that the dead bodies almost didn't even make him feel bad anymore. Death was a normal thing for Yanek he saw it daily.

qoute- Yanek's journey to Buchenwald is full of different povs of people and Yanek talks about how he was enraged at how the dear was treated and handled by his antlers.

quote- After being held captive for nearly six years, the war was over. They were set free from captivity. The Americans came and liberated them. Yanek was relieved he was born again he had a second chance he survived; he had made it; he had won after the Americans had freed the remaining Jews.

quote- Yanek was introduced to who they were hiding with. He had talked with his cousin Yousic and met the people they went in hiding the games. Yanek in the following year moved to America for a better life, but only after a year of being in America, he was drafted to go to the Korean War. With yet another string of luck, he had survived the Korean War too. He changed his name to Jack and A few years later the games moved to America and married the daughter of the couple.
