How to be more inclusive

1. Courses and common language for teachers. It is insufficient to simply implement inclusive methods, instead teachers and staff must be thinking about inclusion in their day to day work. This language should extend to the students and become part of the ethos of the school. This common language should reflect the inclusive values in the school and should be used by the leadership, teachers, and support staff alike.

2. Teamworking tools for students. This should include students with special needs, and specifically target methods and tools that all students can use when working together.

3. Student council. When solving problems in the school it is important to give students a voice and take their views into consideration.

4. Buddy system. Each class will have an older class as a 'buddy class'. They will know that they can go into that class at any time and trust those students with their problem, be it school related or personal. There will be four or five volunteers from the older class who will be designated mentors and work more closely with the younger students. It would not be wise to force all the older students into the buddy system, but instead give willing students the option to participate.

5. Safe space. A small, calm room that can be used by students whenever they like. Usual usage might be for religious reasons, an autistic child might use it to calm down, or a teacher might take a crying child there to console them. There would be plenty of spaces like this.
