Poetry Memorization Assignment

Last year I read a thoughtful article about how asking students to memorize and recite poems was not a "low level" task of memorization but actually included aspects of higher level learning. I tried this out with my students last year and found it a successful assignment. This class has shown me that there are a lot of videos on YouTube that could help students for this assignment. So in my video I present the assignment, it's purpose, show some websites and a YouTube site students might use, and then recite a poem myself from memory. I used an old app I had called Screen-Cast-OMatic which records your computer screen, and I used Apple's PhotoBooth for the recording of me, and behind it the websites/YouTube Sites that I could easily click to so that I could keep this simple.

Students spend a lot of time analyzing writing in English classes. My students are often very astute with their observations, but they have been so unsuccessful in school that they doubt their capabilities. I like to ease them into analysis with artwork, and I'm excited to have a video to share with absent students and to keep online for student reference. I used Google Slides to make the presentation of information and Screencastify to record the video

In 8th-grade history, we do a whole unit on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I have tried many approaches to help special education kids understand some of what is important about the documents. The school has a WeVideo subscription - so I used that to try and learn it. This is a start, however, I do not think I will use it in class until I try to polish it a bit more. I would also like to have the kids use this as a starting point to make videos of their own and explain in their own words what the documents mean.
I did try to upload the video but it said it was to big for Padlet - so here is the link.

I introduce Scratch Jr in 1st grade and then use it to program a story in 2nd grade. I'd like to do more instructional videos next year to have more of a flipped classroom. Students can watch the video on their own, complete the task, and then move on to the next step at their own pace rather than waiting for me to call everyone back together. This video introduces students to motion blocks. I used a Screencast on my iPad to make it. It would also be a great way for kids that are new to the building in 2nd grade to get an introduction to Scratch Jr without the rest of the class waiting for them to catch up. Using instructional videos also allows me more time to circle the room and coach students as needed.

These videos have been a great supplement to my demonstrations. The students have been instructed on safety for 3 weeks and have seen and practiced with machines and tools before making the video. I have also demonstrated the use of a film storyboard so the students to learn how to do a basic outline before filming. We used Flip cameras and the software that comes with the cameras to do all of the editing and titles. Unfortunately, Cisco no longer makes or supports this product. It is too bad since it was so easy for students to use and then produce films.

This video was a practice of a way that I might use a video to give instruction or have students have a visual example of the directions and student sample. Often times, with absences, field trip, interruptions, I find that many students need repeated directions. This will help to explain to students the overview, so I can empower them to go back as many times as they need to to get the answers than may arise. A little rough in the recording, as that will take some polishing on my part, but I am glad that I got to see how easy it would be to create one.

A very large part of teaching another language is showing real life examples of how to use a language in an authentic context. Luckily for me, the "how to" category fit right in with a trip I am currently on. In an effort to show students how to use authentic language in authentic contexts, I have been pushing students to join me on a trip to Costa Rica. This year it finally materialized and I was able to take students to Costa Rica. As part of the trip, I've tried to embed parts that call for them to utilize the grammar and tools they gave gained over the years, such as ordering and answering questions around food service. This video is one of those instances. I used my phone camera and speaker, so the audio may need some work for future filmings, but I've learned quite a bit about how to frame and capitalize on the acoustics from doing some of these field recordings this trip.

My video is a review on what ions are and how to find their charge. I thought this was a good thing to make a video on because it is something that the students are always asking me to go over again. This will give them the ability to review how to do it whenever and wherever (kind of) they want. Additionally it is a topic that comes up again later in the year, and the AP chemistry students start the year reviewing this.

I actually made this video using powerpoint, I was able to create all of the visuals I wanted, then use the export to video feature to record the timings and narrations so that it could be a full video. There are more features I didn’t use that I would try if I had a better camera/mouse. You can take video of yourself while narrating and use the pointer to point to things. It also allows you to redo just a single slide so you don’t have to do any cutting and editing later.

I like being able to make my own video, because I know exactly what they need to know and I can be very precise and to the point.
I made this video using Screencast-O-Matic. It's amazing, especially for photoshop, since it highlights all the tools im using in yellow.

I will use this video to present to my students when they have to create their own Google slideshow presentation!

Ninth graders often struggle to understand the kind of thinking is demanded of them for literary analysis. I decided to do a video that could be a direct lesson in annotating but also serve as a model for how to ask questions during discussions and how to think more deeply about a work of fiction. I recruited my DTL to do the filming and WeVideo to do the editing and production. I am now thinking it would be good to do one of these "models" on each of the 8 key events critical in F451, but that seems a little overwhelming at this point.

My class creates a video "podcast" each month as a newsletter to their parents. This is a brand new undertaking this year, but we are up and running and making changes almost every day! We just got a green screen, professional lighting, and tripod with iPad clip, so we are ready to start creating clips using our equipment. This video will allow the students to create their green screen video using the Do Ink app independently while I am working with other podcast teams. We are using iMovie to create our final product, so I decided to create this in iMovie although I used the computer (iPad doesn't do some of what the computer does) to create my Google Slides. Getting the jpeg files transfered and in place was time-consuming, so I will definitely give wevideo a try next time to see if it is more efficient.

I used Movie Maker Live to make my video.

I recorded this using Screencastify so I am not actually in the video, instead it is showing the Google slides I used for the lesson. Although the concept seems fairly straightforward and students caught on easily during the lesson. I got a lot of questions the following day and decided to make the video so students could rewatch it at home. Overall, I liked using Screencastify to make the video and I think I will utilize it more frequently to record lesson content.

I like to begin playing soprano recorders with students at the beginning of 3rd Grade. Once students buy their recorder, they cannot wait to get started. I created this lesson so that the students could get started learning how to play the recorder (instead of making all sorts of annoying sounds for their parents.) This is a flipped lesson; my goal is for students to get comfortable playing B, A, & G correctly. At the end of the video, I gave the students an assignment. They are to use B, A, & G to create a short fanfare. I am looking forward to hearing their compositions in class. I used PowerPoint and Screencastomatic (free version online) to create my video.

I created a video using Wondershare (Filmora) with a class a few years ago to help students remember the CMASS strategies they should use on the test. The best part was creating the video because the students came up with so many great ideas. They really took ownership of the process. Once I used the video design program, we uploaded it to YouTube to share with the school. It was a lot of fun. It was one of the first times I created a video for my classroom. The video focuses on Language Arts and Math test taking strategies.

The video I created provides two different strategies that parents and caregivers can use to help their child learn how to match colors. The first strategy that was modeled for parents is an example of how you can join in play with sidewalk chalk, and the second strategy is using clean-up to practice matching. This video, and future videos, will attempt to teach parents how to expand their child's development through play and daily routines. I created this video by filming both an A-Roll and B-roll and used wevideo.com to edit them together.

Setting Up a Background in Pivot

This video was made to show a specific process that I teach my students how to do in class. We make stickman animations, and the kids really get into it. Many of them want to know how to create a custom background that they can import into the program for their character to intact within. I take some time and show the kids how to do it, but in the past I have always had to show the same process over and over, even after I do the demo. So, I made this video. I am hoping that after the demo, I can just direct the kids to this video instead of having to walk them through it repeatedly.
I created this video using Debut Screen Capture Software (https://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html) It is not a free tool, but it is affordable. I was able to select just a portion of the screen and record that part instead of the whole screen, which I think makes for a higher quality video. You can upload the video directly to YouTube from the software, but I prefer to save it, and upload manually. For this video, I was almost to the end and made a mistake as I was recording. Rather than re-do the whole thing, I just paused for a moment and repeated the line I messed up. Then I imported the saved video into an editor (I use Hit Film Express 2017, it is free for the basic program). I edited out the error and cleaned out some of the long pauses, saved the video and uploaded the result.
