In the capital of Sabi was a castle, a palace built for the current king of Baekje, King Sunghyeon. On a hot summer day of August 31, a little girl was born under the king and his first wife and she was named Jang Wonyoung. She had an older sister named Jang Jinyoung, who was 3 years older. The entire family awaited the arrival of the new child, hoping that this time they would have a son to take the throne after King Sunghyeon. However, to their dissatisfaction, it was yet another girl.

Wonyoung didn't really receive much attention or care growing up. Her mother, after giving birth to Wonyoung, fell ill and never recovered. The king, needing a son to hand the throne to, turned his attention towards his concubines. Whoever would give him the first son would be crowned the next empress. Wonyoung and her sister grew up under the care of the Sang-gungs (Royal Court Ladies) who treated the two as if they were their own, teaching everything they needed to be a proper princess.

Wonyoung, not having much friends of her age other than her sister, spent most of her time outdoors, in the forests, minging with the nature. She learned to befriend animals without needing to domesticate them, and often, she found herself surrounded by a multitude of bunnies or birds which allowed her to not feel lonely. However, as the two sisters grew older, their personalities diverged. Wonyoung grew to be a more soft spoken and introverted while her older sister remained more extroverted and adventurous.

Fall of Baekje

Wonyoung remembers all the wars and fighting that started around the time she reached 19. More often than not, she was woken up by all the movement and chaos outside of the castle walls as fights broke out in both directions, from Silla to the right and Tang China to the left. She would watch from afar as her father laid orders after orders to secure the walls and keep the citizens safe.

Then one day, everything stopped. The castle walls were breached and group of men came rushing in, wiping away all of the people in the palace before finally reaching the room of the king and the two sisters. They gathered the three, taking them hostage as they proudly marched back to Tang China. There, they were tossed into the dungeon while the emperor of Tang decided what to do with his war prisoners.

Arranged Marriage and Separation

It took the emperor almost a full year to make a decision and in the dungeon, the family was barely surviving. Day after day, they were given only the bare minimum amount of food to keep them alive but even then, her beauty was hard to hide. She had grown tall with long wavy hair cascading down her back. In the 19 years of her life in the palace, she had learned to become a graceful woman. Even in the hardships of the prison, she held herself gracefully, refusing to let any of her princess lessons go to waste.

Then the day came. The emperor's final verdict. Her and her sister was to be 'sold off' into an arranged marriage to the noble families while the former King Seonghyun was taken into the castle as a personal servant for the emperor himself.

The arranged marriage came as a first come first serve basis, whoever got their hands on either sister would get to have them as their arranged bride. No love, no feelings. The day after the news broke out, she was married off to one of the noblemen.

Golden Lotus

The arranged marriage merely tied her to a man, a stranger. But no feelings were involved. The nobleman didn't pay her any attention even after marrying her and as long as she didn't get in his way, they would co-exist under one roof. Other than being a little bored, the terms of the marriage seemed doable. They could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. He didn't care if she went out or stayed the night elsewhere. He seemingly had a lover, but that never really bothered Wonyoung, she never really grew to have any feelings for him.

After a year of this said marriage, she was now 21. One day she heard some of the townspeople talk about a place called Golden Lotus and Wonyoung, being curious and bored, found herself wandering over to the pavilion.
