Failure in promotion as a chance to refocus on values

I went for promotion to professor on the teaching specialist track in 2023. It wasn't successful, and of course I threw my toys out the pram for a bit - I felt hurt, like my work wasn't being valued, and that there was no point trying again. After some more mature reflection, I saw the positives - I could now focus on the things in work that mattered to me, not those which seemed like they were the right things to do for promotion. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that has led to a better work-life balance, and actually a position where I feel I could now apply again for promotion, as I've been doing things of which I'm genuinely proud!
