I had recently looked at Matt Calderwood balancing sculptures (http://www.mattcalderwood.com) and, when I got the pieces of cardboard, my idea was to find a way to balance them without using any adhesive. The bigger piece of cardboard is balanced with the piece that act as stairs. The review includes 385 references from related medical literature and offers strong evidence of the contribution of the arts and humanities to the enhancement of patient recovery. However, many of these studies concentrate on the influence of sound and music, with the remainder focusing on literature, poetry and two-dimensional visual arts. The review concludes by recommending that new-media art forms be integrated into and evaluated within the healthcare culture.
There is a common humanistic acceptance that the arts have an important role to play in this context, and based on extensive patient observation and consultation the importance of the arts has been recognized and embraced in the contemporary hospital environment.
Artworks in healthcare environments help with:

This projects are the result of 80 workshops with inpatients, staff and the community.

Each floor has furniture and other features in a different colour which makes it easier to navigate for patients and also makes for a happier- more relaxed environment. Monotony and the poor conditions of a building are a contributory factor to low morale and sense of well-being for patients, staff and visitors/relatives.

Recognition time for Alzheimer’s sufferers is significantly faster if colour is used as a cue, it improves day-to-day functioning, even for simple things.

A room in a different colour from others in an establishment can encourage service users to visit that space, e.g.: a blue room in an otherwise all pink building.

Dementia patients were shown to be more interested in their food if served off different coloured plates.

I wanted a shape more fitting for a wall so tried an A3 and A4 sizes as was not sure the A4 would be big enough as the design is quite delicate. It turns out the A4 would have been fine after all. Unfortunately, I had changed the image to improve it but made an error on Illustrator so the cutout is still not what I needed ( a part of the sun was cutout in error). I did save some of the small cutouts which can be used for a different wall and also as stencils to paint the same shapes in another part of the space. Booked another space at the workshop for Thursday the 8th Dec.
