The first theme in this book is discovering identity. As a mini lesson, I would have my students do a character analysis on Hollis. They would work in small groups to create a timeline of the book and describe times when the character changed or portrayed new traits. This activity will help them identify Hollis as a character as she uncovered her identity on her journey.
Vocabulary: Identity, Character Analysis, Static Character, Dynamic Character, Traits.

I would have the students do an individual activity for this theme. They would choose two to three friends or people in their lives and compare and contrast them to Beatrice and Josie in Hollis's life. The people they choose must be people who give them a sense of belonging, as Josie and Beatrice do for Hollis. They will make a sort of diagram board to present the similarities in the relationships, making a text-to-self connection.
Vocabulary: Compare, Contrast, Relationship, Secondary Characters, Main Characters.

Unconditional Love

I would like this lesson to promote the idea that everyone you meet has a life you know nothing about. The students will discuss the importance of unconditional love and who loves them unconditionally in their lives. Then we will discuss people who lack the amount of unconditional love they deserve, like foster children or children with home problems. I would like them to conduct a research project on one of these types of children and share their findings with the class. My hope in this is that they will learn that not all children receive the love they deserve, and that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.
Vocabulary: Unconditional, Research Project, Share Findings.
