Post 1 - Character Traits Beneatha

Determination
“…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” p. 50

Explanation: Beneatha shows her persistence by making it know that shes determined to become a doctor some way, some how. Even when money was tight Beneatha had showed that she will work to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor. Determination is a character trait people acquire when they feel very strongly about doing or completing something, and that's a trait Beneatha fully fits. In reality Beneatha's dreams were ruined when Walter lost the family's insurance check, but with hope Beneatha kept going on with great determination in becoming a doctor.

Focused
“Get over it? What are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I’m going to be a doctor. I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet – IF I ever get married.” p.50

Explanation: Despite what Ruth thinks Beneatha should do and what she should focus on Beneatha is focused on her main goal of becoming a doctor. Beneatha is a focused determined persistent young woman who cares about her well being in life over getting married to someone she isn't interested in. Beneatha helps others with the thought of becoming a doctor in the back of her head never leaving. All the way true Beneatha has stayed focused on her dream even when the vision was blurry she kept a positive mindset of what she wanted to become.

In my personal opinion I feel that Beneatha is a very strong woman who deeply cares for her family and their needs, but at the same time she doesn't loose herself and what it is she wants in the process. Beneatha has faced hard dry times with her husband Walter who adds more stress unintentionally simply because he can't pick up and find himself. Beneatha time and time again shows her Strong persistent character by picking her husbands distressed spirit off the ground while at the same time, she's trying to achieve what she wants to do and be in life. Beneatha makes sure she always has a sense of self at the same time Beneatha has proven her worth as a strong woman with care for people and not only herself.

This is the art piece I choose to explain Beneatha. This piece is exemplary to Beneatha's character because she is a fierce strong woman who is always picking up her family making sure they are all okay even though things get hard she remains a bright positive person. When Walter lost the money she didn't flip out kick, holler, or scream she kept calm and kept her dream alive. Beneatha does have times where she doesn't keep calm but once she gets through it she is back to a bright attitude.

Poem
If you have a strong skill and a strong will
You know that you can survive
Maintain a positive attitude at all times
So that way you can thrive
Do not let anything stand in your way
Just keep your composure
Focus on the good things
So that way, you can build on your exposure -Ronell Warren Alman

Explanation: This poem by Ronell Warren Alman told the positive strong character that Beneatha portrays. In line 9, Ronell relates to Beneatha because in a lot of terrible times Beneatha always tries to keep composure and focus on good things. In lines 3 and 4 Ronell speaks on the idea that if you "maintain a positive attitude at all times" you can thrive, this much relates to Beneatha because she has this unbeatable attitude from keeping a positive demeanor so that her and her family can thrive. Overall this poem by Ronell Warren Alman is a good representation of Beneatha because in short this poem is telling you skills and techniques to build up a strong character.

"You Gotta Be" - Des'ree

Explanation: The third and fourth line of the song is a crucial part of what makes up Beneatha's character because Beneatha and her husband Walter are always arguing and bickering and causing her Beneatha more stress, but through it all she tries to keep her head help high. In the chorus Des'ree says " You gotta stronger, you gotta be cool, you gotta be calm" this is a message Beneatha is constantly giving Walter to help better himself, Beneatha is not only trying to build her self worth but also her husbands self worth. In lines five and six after the chorus des'ree says "some may have more cash than you, others take a different view", this corresponds to the time Lindner came by and formally persuaded the Youngers to not move Clybourne Park, Beneatha and her family remained calm and understood that others have a different view but never let that stop them from the mission they had. The song overall relates to the constant diligent character that Beneatha has become.

Topic: Dreams vs. reality

Quote: “Mama, a job? I open and close car doors all day long. I drive a man around in his limousine and I say, ‘Yes, sir; no, sir; very good, sir; shall I take the Drive, sir?’ Mama, that ain’t no kind of job… that ain’t nothing at all.” P. 73

Explanation: This quote relates to the topic of dreams vs reality because Walter had this one dream of being an entrepreneur by owning his own liquor store, but in reality he rides people around answering their commands for a living. Walter's dream was to not only provide for himself but also provide for his family, Walter was through with being a scoffer and seeing his family struggle. Walter had big plans of saving him and his family from poverty, little did he know he was only looking from the perspective of a dream. The entire Younger family has possessed a dream, even when reality was saying that their dreams were never going to happen they always kept their heads high and worked for what they wanted.
