To Scout, its important to prove that she isn't afraid of the Radley place because she wants the boys to think she's brave. When she's reluctant they call her a girl or a sissy and that just makes her want to fit in with the boys.

To Jem it's important because he is the oldest and wants to be seen as heroic and admirable to them. It also helps him keep respect and be seen as brave.

For Dill, he's only in the area during the summer anyways so he wants to be seen as cool and unafraid just like the other two.

All of their motives are similar with their own little parts to them

Jem basically says that girls are stupid and make things up and they're hated by everybody else. This could be foreshadowing to make a girl character (Maybe Scout) do something good and give Jem some character devlopment.

Something from this chapter that connect to the present day is the misogyny. Even now a huge portion of men (and women) think that women are superior to men. That's the same way that Jem thinks.

Another thing is that people feel like they have the right to poke/pry in other peoples lives. Many kids today are just like the kids in this book because they mess with things and people they shouldn't.

Describe a significant event in your life such as a problem or a change that you understand better now than you did when it happened. Why was the event important/significant? What is the difference between how you understood it then and how you do now? Why do you think your perspective has changed?

When my family was looking to buy a new house in sixth grade I remember being very reluctant to move at all and hated the idea of leaving. I wanted to stay at home and keep going to the same school I always have. This was important because I did end up moving but staying in the area and it really effected my life. Like I said, I really wanted to stay and did not want to move to the city at all. Now I really wish that I had moved. Like every day. I guess the reason my perspective has since changed is that my best friend was the reason I wanted to stay. Now she's completely changed. She's not nice anymore and I don't even think she likes me. I understand why my mom wanted to move more because she didn't want to be around my dad and now I don't want to be around my friends.

Chapter 13 - Aunt Alexandra

Aunt Alexandra is Jem and Scouts aunt and Atticus's sister. She is very proud of her family (the Finches) and, according to Scout, "fits into Maycomb like a glove". Within the first few pages of meeting her its apparent she is very judgmental and maybe a bit of a hypocrite. She speaks of how nearly everybody in Maycomb has come sort of "streak". She also clearly wants Scout to change, become more girly, and do more things. She goes as far as to call Scout sluggish and make Atticus talk to the kids about becoming more like a Finch.
