When the mealworms ate 6 grams of food they didn't gain 6 drams nor did they have 6 grams of waste. Some of the food was turned into waste, some was used for biosynthesis which is when large organic molecules are turned into small organic molecules than are transported to the cells in need through the bloodstream and are saved for later use. These large organic molecules are made of matter and matter has mass. This makes up for another part of the weight from the food. The rest of the food went through cellular respiration which is the process the body uses to get energy from our food during this process co2 and h20 are produced and exhaled.
