This is not your typical icebreaker, but rather, this activity is meant to learn about the culture & customs of your classmates.

“How does your family/your culture cook rice?” (credit: Dr. Amber Spry) If you don't cook/eat rice share something about what you do cook and/or eat with your family & friends. Perhaps you cook grits, oatmeal, bread, or another favorite or traditional family dish.

I wish we could all get together and share a meal. Cooking together and sharing a meal are great ways to build relationships and community.

Click on the pink + symbol on the bottom right of screen to post.

In Colombia we have a dish called "arroz con pollo" which just means rice with chicken. It is a very common dish that is easy and delicious. The dish has chicken, rice, peppers, garlic, vegetables like carrots, peas, and beans and saffron which gives the rice a yellowish color.

My family buys microwaveable or boil-in-bag rice. It's quick and easy, but I think all the plastic from it is kind of wasteful and not cost-effective, so I plan to get a rice cooker when I live on my own.
We have rice with a lot of meals, whenever we have chicken and rice, tacos or fajitas, or make our own Chinese food, which we all have a lot.

My family eats Jasmine rice with almost every meal. It takes a while to cook because my mom cleans the rice before she cooks it. Once its finished cooking she adds butter and honey to it. The only time we don't eat rice is when we're having breakfast.

My family usually makes rice with corn in it. We eat rice with almost every meal. Most of the food we eat has rice as a side dish because the food is supposed to be mixed or eaten along side the rice. We rarely ever have our meals without rice.

My family eats rice a few nights a week. I guess we consistently eat it with beans. everyone put what they want on the beans and it kind of flavors the rice. It might be hot sauce or lime. It's simple and I come from a big family so it has always been better to have meals that everyone can customize.
