The Olive Tree by Elsa Martson

Sameer has always enjoyed picking olives off of the tree outside her house. When a new family moves in next door, Sameer is saddened that Muna (little girl next door) states the olives belong to her family. When lightning strikes the tree, the children (literally) offer an olive branch of friendship.
Discussion Questions: How does the wall between the houses separate the families? Do you think it's a good thing it was struck by lightning? Do you know what an olive branch represents? Why might the author have chosen this tree?
Activity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tuvIU1kY_U
Watch the video and reflect: How does fighting work for them? What happens when they finally decide to respect each other's needs?

In only 34 words, Raschka tells the story of an unlikely friendship. The two boys one black, one white, exchange words on the street that lead to a mutual understanding of friendship.
Discussion: Why do you think the author chose to tell this story in so few words? Why is it unlikely that these boys became friends?
Activity: Describe how an apple and an orange can be similar in as few words as possible.

Unhei is nervous that the American kids in her new school won't be able to pronounce her Korean name. She tells her new classmates she will pick a new name by the end of the week. She fills a jar with name options. At the end of the week, there is only one name in the jar; Unhei. Her classmates tell her she should be herself, and learn how to pronounce it.
Discussion Questions: Why is Unhei afraid to be herself? Would you be afraid? How might it feel if they said her name wrong? How do you think Unhei felt when her classmates responded the way they did?
Activity: Each time a student does something nice for you, write it down and put it in the class jar. Each time you notice something unique and special about a classmate, write it down and put it in the jar. At the end of the week, we will celebrate our kindness and respect for each other as friends.

The women of Iceland have a hard time gathering eggs for baking, so they go to town to buy chickens. The chickens grow to enjoy their time with the women, and even begin acting like them - including not laying eggs. The ladies must find a way to get these chickens to lay eggs!
Discussion Questions: Have you ever had to solve a problem you had with a friend? How did you approach that problem?
Activity: Create a short play about problem solving with a friend. Before you write it, research Iceland's culture, and add at least one detail specific to Iceland.

Students host a 'country fair'. Each student is responsible for choosing a country to research. They will research history, geography, and culture of their country. They then create a visual representation of their country (poster, tri-fold, etc) to share with other students as they view the country fair. Students would be encouraged to dress appropriately for their country as well as attempt local recipes and traditional foods to share.
After the fair, students reflect and discuss what they learned and enjoyed about getting to know different parts of the world.
