The World War II Battle of Guadalcanal was the first major offensive and a decisive victory for the Allies in the Pacific (USA). With Japanese troops stationed in this section of the Solomon Islands, U.S. marines launched a surprise attack in August 1942 and took control of an air base under construction. a total of 24,000 Japanese soldiers were killed while less than 2,000 U.S soldiers were killed. the battle in the sea was fairly even with both forces losing many ships. the Allies also dominated the battle in the air.

From a Japanese perspective, in order to expand their and take control over all of the Pacific, they needed to take control in the Solomon Islands. They required control over the Solomons due to it being very important to the Americans if they were to support Australia for them to be able to protect themselves from a Japanese attack.

In an article published in The Japanese Times, an ex-Japanese soldier from the Battle of Guadalcanal recalls his time in the war. He describes Guadalcanal as “island of death from starvation” and that after a short time food supplies ran out and “There weren’t even any frogs, snakes or mice to eat.”
