Lizzie Borden Trial (Synthesis Essay) by Carla

Determine the Secretary (who will write your consensus response in the padlet) and your Foreman (spokesperson for your group). In your groups, read and review “Evidence A” - “Evidence E”. Once completed synthesize an answer to the age old question “what really happened that night?”. In order to successfully navigate this assignment you must reach a consensus (agreement). Share your response with the class utilizing at least 2 pieces of text evidence to support your position (in the padlet). We will also discuss. Each group must have a secretary and a foreman and their response must be submitted via this padlet.

(Source D).

3) According to the testimony of Churchill and Dr. Bowen, no one else (living) was present in the house and if a intruder came, Churchill would've known so it is a inside job. Additionally, the doctor mentions that nothing in the house was disarranged so if a intruder did come, there would have been a scuffle at least between the victims and the intruder but that was not the case. It was someone the father and the stepmom trusted hence proving that Lizzie and even the Maid possibly had a hand in it.

1) I believe Lizzie Is guilty for the murder of her dad and step mother.
2) "Saw a lady come out the way from the barn right to the stairs back of the house, the north side stairs. She had on a dark-colored dress. Nothing on her head. Was walking very slow." (source E)
" I don't think I went to sleep at all. I heard no sound; I didn't hear the opening or closing of the screen door. I can hear that from my room if anyone is careless and slams the door. The next thing was that Miss Lizzie hollered, "Maggie, come down!" I said, "What is the matter?" She says, "Come down quick; Father's dead; somebody came in and killed him." This might be ten or fifteen minutes after the clock struck eleven, as far as I can judge." (source c)
3) this demonstrates how Lizzie was the only person downstairs with her parents when this took place. As soon as Maggie went upstairs that when she heard Lizzie scream that her father was killed. Which shows how Lizzie had time to leave the house quietly and go into the barn to get the ax and come back into the house and make it seem as if she was not the one who killed them.

1) Lizzie Borden is guilty of the murders.

2)Source C: "“I heard no sound; I didn't hear the opening or closing of the screen door. I can hear that from my room if anyone is careless and slams the door. The next thing was that Miss Lizzie hollered, "Maggie, come down!" I said, "What is the matter?" She says, "Come down quick; Father's dead; somebody came in and killed him." This might be ten or fifteen minutes after the clock struck eleven, as far as I can judge.”

Source D: "“Glanced about the room and saw there was nothing disturbed; neither the furniture nor anything at all. Mr. Borden was lying with his face toward the south, on his right side, and apparently at ease, as if asleep. His face was hardly to be recognized by one who knew him."

3) Source C proves my point because prior to the murder, Lizzie was asking Bridget many questions, and Bridget did not hear any closing or opening of the door, therefore it was something that happened by someone already in the house, which is Lizzie because she called for Maggie right after it happened to make herself not look guilty. Source D supports my consensus because the doctor says the place looks as if nothing was touched or moved around, and if it were an intruder, I'm assuming the place would be a mess because they are breaking in. This proves again that the killing was done by someone already in the house, which is Lizzie.

He was passing slowly towards the south. He was paler than common, and acting strangely."
3) According to source A, since they were saying that Lizzie was not there when it happened, this helps us understand that she was not the one who killed her father nor stepmother. And in source B they were saying that some person was acting weirdly suspicious, so from this we can tell that this person might have done the killing of Mr and Mrs Borden and not Lizzie Borden.

Lizzie Borden is guilty of the murder of her father and Mrs.Borden.

Source C: “Then I heard like a person at the door was trying to unlock the door but could not; so I went to the front door and unlocked it. The spring lock was locked. I unbolted the door and it was locked with a key; there were three locks. I said "pshaw," and Miss Lizzie laughed, upstairs. Her father was out there on the doorstep. She was upstairs.”

Source E:
“Saw a lady come out the way from the barn right to the stairs back of the house, the north side stairs. She had on a dark-colored dress. Nothing on her head. Was walking very slow. I didn't see her go in the house. Have seen the servant at that house: delivered ice cream there two or three weeks earlier. This woman was not the servant. Am sure of it.”

Source C shows my point of view on this case, as it shows Lizzie's suspicious acts, laughing at a very strange situation. Bridget didn't understand the reason for this. However, after this Lizzie continued asking him questions and influencing him in one way or another to leave the house, a few hours after this Lizzie told Bridget that she had found her father dead from her. In the ice cream maker's statement, he claims that the woman he saw very close to the house on the day of the murder was not the housekeeper.
