Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) was one of the most influential people to ever live. He played a massive roll for the rights of African Americans and the idea of everyone together. He did so much to help with pushing rights for African Americans and how they were treated. He was the man behind many events such as the 1963 March on Washington. Martin Luther King Jr was such a big impact on history that he now has his own day which falls on the third Monday of January each year. This day is called “Martin Luther King Jr Day” and is celebrated throughout America.

In 1963 MLK delivered one of the most influential speeches with the “I have a dream” speech. This was a speech about peace and equality with all races. This speech opened up many people’s eyes on racism especially when MLK was named “Man of the Year”. People started to realise what was actually happening around the world and how bad it was. In the 1950’s buses were a main source of transport for a lot of people as not many people had anything like cars. This is when blacks would have to sit at the back of the bus and give up their seats for whites. MLK would stand up for this and many other things that were happening. This put him at massive risk as whites would abuse him, he would get arrested and they would even bomb his house. MLK was risking his life for the rights of blacks and this was a slow but rewarding process. MLK could have offended many white people at the time as they ruled everything and didn’t believe blacks had any rights. Nowadays most people don’t realise how bad racism was and how much MLK effected it all. He put his life at risk for them.

What I find most inspiring

What I find most inspiring about MLK is that he was so influential as just one person and especially with all the abuse he put up with. As just one person he stood up for his worldview and what he thought was the right thing. This involving the whole world and every person as he thought everyone should be treated the same and all races should come together. This point caused so much hate for him, but he still stood up for his worldview and showed how strong he was. He had his house bombed, he was abused physically and arrested but he continued to stay strong.

Why he was less than Perfect

MLK wasn’t a perfect man and one of the things he believed was that god was the only perfect human. MLK made a few mistakes in his personal life like being unfaithful to his wife and smoking which aren’t the worst things to happen. He was a mostly good human and understood himself. He knew the amount of power he had and chose what to do with that power carefully.

MLK was heavily into Christianity and this was the base for most of his actions. After attending Boston University he became a pastor for Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. In 1957 he would also become the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. MLK was always interested in civil rights and world peace. MLK was heavily into Gandhi’s story and non-violence policy. Both Gandhi and Christianity shaped how MLK thought and what he did. He wanted everyone to come together and have peace without the violence. That was the main focus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the main reason he was president.
