The importance of relations between countries lies in fostering global stability, promoting economic prosperity, and addressing shared challenges. Diplomatic, economic, and cultural interactions between nations create a network of cooperation that benefits all parties involved. Before the contemporary worries of trade, culture and environmental cooperation, it is important to understand the physical relationships and the people who have traveled our world to share their journeys. Many people who were born across the world come here to the United States for new opportunities or to escape old challenges. There is a large swathe of individuals who were born here with parents that moved from a different country, meaning that they live a different lifestyle and face challenges their ancestors did not in their home countries. Taking a step into these people's lives gives us a new perspective on our own, and reassess some aspects of our life we may have been taking for granted or never realized the value of.

Smith's work to portray her heritage and inspirations gives the viewer a reminder of the sacrifices which were made and will continue to be made by individuals at the behest of their governments.

Arshile Gorky's painting represents one of the possible causes of immigration, being war and genocide. The intensity of this painting along with the unfinished nature lend themselves to a feeling of grim reality. Gorky and his sister and mother survived the Armenian Genocide, but his mother did not recover from the impact that the genocide left, dying of starvation in 1919. Gorky moved to the United States with his sister a year later, at just 15 years old, to begin a new life away from where his previous one was taken from him.

Marshall's piece demonstrates the inequalities minorities in America face, despite being the place they were born and raised by parents native to the continent. "Many Mansions" depicts a public housing project typical of large cities such as Chicago which failed to create resounding solutions to low-income housing. A cheery disposition from the characters within the painting compared to the environment they reside in shows a startling contrast between the two.

"Many Mansions" - https://www.artic.edu/artworks/137125/many-mansions

Rothko's painting of a color field draws upon his constant pursuit of art that expresses the most primal of human emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom and more. Rothko was born into a troubled childhood with lifelong severe anxiety and a drinking/smoking habit, leading him to try and express the darkness which plagued him through art and expression.
