The first Spanish settlement Capra was founded on 8 August 1508 by Juan Ponce de Leon a lieutenant under Columbus. He became the first governor of Puerto Rico. The next year the settlement was abandoned in favor for a nearby islet on the coast, named Puerto Rico.
