I think that the grandfather would have been very proud of Billy. He encouraged him even when the task was scary and hard. The grandpa was also encouraging because he reminded Billy that there was a delicious meal to look forward to back at the house. The grandpa was also proud of himself for the knowledge that he could give Billy. I like that grandpa said "Don't ever start something that you can't finish." I think grandpa might have have a lot of hard things in his life and that is why he wants Billy to be able to cut down the tree.

I think that Mama was very worried for Billy. In the part we read from the book, she was asking if he was okay, made sure he got cleaned up, made him food, and told him the coon was not worth all the trouble. She was probably really worried and anxious that Billy would get hurt trying to chop down that big tree when he could just find another coon to hunt.

Old Dan and Little Ann would have viewed the scene as a stressful time. They were trying to do everything that Billy asked of them but had to overcome their own fears. It was a battle of what would win out: loyalty to Billy or fear of the creek? I'm sure that there was some frustration in these dogs while trying to overcome the creek, with Billy pushing them and pushing them, but in the end, their loyalty was worth more than the possibility of danger.

The dogs were very sad and frustrated when they lost the trail because they wanted to please Billy. They love Billy and they really didn't want to let him down.
When Little Ann found the trail again, she was very excited and wasted no time in getting back on track to catching up with the raccoon. It took Old Dan a little bit longer, but he was also very, very excited to join in the hunt for the raccoon.
When they finally treed the raccoon, they were very excited and felt satisfied. They had treed their first coon and they hadn't let Billy down.

Sister observed her brother and was immediately intrigued by his daring nature and determination. She doubted his ability and considered him insane. I think she felt amazed at the same time and secretly would have joined in on the fun if it wasn't for legitimate fear and rationality. The fact that she had to be chased away leaves me thinking she was more drawn to this adventure than I initially perceived.

Mama shows that she is very nurturing. She truly cares for Billy, and it seems like she might be worried about all of the ax-swinging he did. She took great care to make sure he was okay afterward. I imagine that the rebuffs of Papa and Grandpa would be frustrating for her. They seem to dismiss her concerns even though she just wants to make sure her son is well. She was probably really worried about Billy, and I'm sure she was wishing he hadn't have done so much work for the coon. I think that she hopes he doesn't put in any more effort for the coon. She seems exasperated by Papa's comments.

I think that mama was very concerned for her son Billy. She right away asks if he is alright and looks him over to make sure that there’s is no obvious injury. In this part of the story we also read that she draws him a hot bath and then rubs him with liniment. It is very obvious that mama is doing whatever she can to make Billy feel better. She also stands up for Billy a bit to his papa the next day when he asks if Billy is a Little’s stiff. Mama shows her concern by exclaiming he isn’t more than just still. She just wants what isn’t best for her son.

I think that the sister probably would have been surprised to see what her brother was attempting to do. Her father may have simply asked her to bring her brother some food as he was trying to cut down a tree, but her father may not have mentioned how big the tree actually was. Therefore, when the sister can upon her brother and the tree he was trying to shop down, she was very surprised at it's size. Why would he attempt to cut down such an enormous tree? He must be crazy. The sister assumes that her brother must be crazy, so she tries to look into his eyes to see if they have turned green. Her mother once told her that when people go crazy, their eyes turn green. However, when she tried to look into her brothers eyes, he became upset and scared her away with a stick. I think that the sister may have been actually afraid that her brother was going to hit her with the stick, but later, she could have realized that maybe he just did not want to be bothered by her anymore. As a result, the sister may think that she will just leave him be to his crazy desires.

I think the sister was feeling a rush of emotions: scared for her brother, astonished at his choice to cut down such a massive tree, and worried for his safety. Her emotions were running wild because she thought he was crazy, crazy enough to be like Old Man Johnson. She even asks to look into his eyes to see if they had turned green, a crazy shade. Sister is frustrated that her brother will not listen to her and chases her away with a stick. He threatens her. Throughout the entire exchange, I think the sister has a more negative attitude.
