Surface tension can be seen in multiple aspects of everyday life. Water insects, like the Water Strider, use surface tension to enable an attraction between their legs and the water that allows them to walk on top of it. It can also be simply found in the morning dew that covers grass. Water condenses in the morning to form beads that, because of surface tension, form a spherical shape.

It is because of surface tension that objects less denser than water are able to float. Without surface tension even the smallest objects would not be able to float. At the atomic level, water molecules prevent the cell membrane from collapsing on itself. Surface tension also allows the cytoplasm, or the jelly like middle that fills the cell, to hold up the cell membrane. If the pressure would increase too much, then the water would break down the cell membrane and drown the cell. High surface tension is also mandatory for water and blood transport in plants and animals. Plus, it contributes immensely in sheltering humans by not seeping through umbrellas, tents, and even rain coats.

Water is known as the "universal solvent" because it has the ability to dissolve a larger amount of substances than any other liquid. Water alone is vital to the survival of any living thing. No matter where water goes, it carries chemicals, nutrients, and minerals that are valuable. For instance, the partnership human kidneys share with water is mandatory in keeping us alive. Kidneys are responsible for filtering out substances that we consume. Right after kidneys accumulate a substance they have to get rid of it. Water, being the universal solvent, washes through the kidneys and dissolves these substances.
