3) The connection to our LL assignment is that the article on marginalization of the Chinese and their spot in China town shows the evolution and what the main stream restaurants have done to relate and attract customers that are not natives. In relation to our assignment of LL we are focusing on data collection that relates to our research question. In the end of the article it states data on how stores that are Chinese based vs American based have different geosemiotic features. - Breeanna Schmidt

1. What is the main point of the section?

In this section the author Jia Jackie Lou studies the geosemiotic framework of signage in Chinatown. Lou finds that a lot of non-chinese businesses such as Starbucks, have adopted the Chinese style of vertical signage that read from bottom to top. Other companies such as Subway, have adopted another Chinese style of signage where signs are symmetrical. This adoption of Chinese signage allows for non-Chinese businesses to appeal to a alleger audience.

4. What does marginalization define in this study?

The marginalization define as Non-Chinese shop or store in Chinatown has less visitor, because people live in Chinatown or foreign people more likely to see culture things and race.

2. Throughout the understanding in between the restaurants and essentially what was pushed forward towards the public, the visual cues within the signs were clear in detail. The detail that was paid in terms of how these signs appeared meant to capture both the english audience and the chinese audience. Some questions that could have harbored the research/fieldwork process during this assessment revolved around: why did the signs depict more english text instead of chinese script? Why was the emphasis of english text heavier than that of chinese? How do these small details affect the community and the visiting population? What factors such as color and placement contribute towards the creation of these signs? What do these sign make the viewer feel? These questions, along with some that might not have been covered, might have harbored over the research process.

-Edwin
