Lily Wong Fillmore is a linguist (Ph.D. in Linguistics from Stanford University) and an educator (volunteer teacher in farm labor camps from 1954 to 1964); and member of Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education faculty (1974-2004). Much of her research, teaching and writing over the past four and a half decades has focused on issues related to the education of language minority students. She has explored social and cognitive processes in language learning, cultural differences in language learning behavior, sources of variation in learning, and primary language retention and loss. She has conducted studies of second language learners in school settings that include Latino, Asian, American Indian and Alaskan Native children. Since her retirement from the Berkeley faculty in 2004, she has worked with educators in urban school districts (Denver, Boston, NYC, San Francisco, Albuquerque and Fresno), and with the Council of Great City Schools, to improve academic language and literacy instruction for English learners and other linguistically diverse students.

The Foundations course presents the research and theory of action that frame the subsequent 10 courses. It builds on the premise that ELLs and struggling students must have access to grade level content and receive instruction that builds their capacity to engage in complex thinking as well as understand and produce complex forms of written and spoken language. The Foundations course provides participants who subsequently enroll in the ELA and/or Math courses with a common language and understanding of the important role that academic language plays in learning grade level content and the central role that teachers play in creating engaging and rigorous learning experiences.

Citation: n.a.
