Eveline Bukka

Eveline

Speech:

1.Eveline's dialogue appears sparingly throughout the story, with the sole instance occurring at the very end:

‘No! No! No! It was impossible. Her hands clutched the iron in frenzy. Amid the seas she sent a cry of anguish!’

‘Eveline! Evvy!’

Even during this process, Eveline remains silent. Throughout the entire narrative, Eveline's thoughts are conveyed solely through inner monologue.

2. Her final silence revealed a conflicted state of mind: she had intended to leave but ultimately hesitated. She reveals her deep fear of her father's violence ("she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father's violence"), her sense of duty to her family ("her promise to keep the home together as long as she could"), and her romanticized yet vague hope for a better life with Frank ("He would give her life, perhaps love, too").

3. This story is told from a third-person perspective, but it does not directly reveal the characters' inner thoughts or “true selves.” Instead, it relies on detailed descriptions or the characters' own expressions of confusion. For example: “She had hard work to keep the house together...” is the narrator speaking, but “Was that wise?” is clearly Eveline's own internal doubt. Readers gain access to her consciousness from within, yet it remains framed by a third-person perspective.

4.Throughout the preceding sections, we were told what had happened, but at the very end, the story directly informs the reader of the events.

Thinking：

1. Eveline is thinking about the past, her present misery, and her uncertain future.

2. Readers know her thoughts through the free indirect discourse of the third-person narrator. The narrator acts as a conduit for Eveline's consciousness.

3. Internally, she acknowledges the horror of her home life and desperately wants to escape. She thinks, "Escape! She must escape!" and even makes plans to do so. However, her actions are defined by paralysis. In the critical moment, her body and will betray her thoughts. She cannot move, and her only action is to cling to the railing, rejecting the escape she so deeply desired. Her final action (inaction) is the ultimate mismatch with her internal desire.

Her father: He was threatening, controlling, and an alcoholic (He was worse at the weekend). He argued with her over money, forbade her from seeing Frank, and used violence as an implicit threat. Yet at times he would care for Eveline, leaving her conflicted.Frank portrayed as the classic sailor archetype—masculine and open-hearted. He appears kind to Eveline, going on dates with her and sharing tales of the sea, yet his true nature remains elusive to the reader. For instance, it's unclear whether this sailor truly loved her (perhaps gave her love too).

Eveline is largely passive. She does not do things to others; she has things done to her. Her Father bullies her, controls her, and keeps her financially and emotionally trapped. Frank could save her, bring her to a new world.

The character most described in this article is Eveline. Among the descriptions, there are many about her thoughts and actions. This is a story told from a third-person perspective. The article describes that Eveline has been thinking repeatedly about whether she should run away. Even though she thinks of reasons not to stay—such as being constantly oppressed by her father, feeling very lonely, and having a boyfriend who can help her escape and start a new life. But she finally chooses to stay through her actions. This is because she also thinks of her elderly father, the promise she made to her mother, and her uncertainty about whether her boyfriend truly loves her. Eveline's thoughts and actions are connected: her struggling thoughts lead to inconsistent actions. "Their passage had been booked" reflects that she and her boyfriend had been preparing for the escape, but Eveline decides to stay when they are about to board the ship at the last moment. Additionally, Eveline's father treats her in a complicated way. He would exploit and deny her, but he would also read stories to her when she is ill. Moreover, As Eveline's boyfriend, Frank would take her to the theater and help her escape. However, judging from Eveline's final decision, Frank might not be that perfect in her heart.

The narration is mainly in the third person and focuses on speeches, thoughts, and actions. 1. Speech

In the story, Evian rarely speaks directly. Her "voice" mainly exists in her inner thoughts, while the external dialogue comes from other characters, such as her father's harsh words. Her lack of direct dialogue reflects her introverted and repressed personality, and also indicates that she is reluctant to open up and express herself, being restrained by shyness or fear.

2. Thoughts

This story unfolds through Evian's inner monologue, revealing the conflicts in her inner world. It mainly includes the following three points: The first point is that she recalls her childhood, such as playing in the fields, and the attitude of her father was sometimes kind and sometimes violent. The second point is considering leaving home, such as when she was at home, she had "a place and food", but had to endure heavy labor and fear of her father's violent behavior; while living with Frank in Buenos Aires, there was hope for respect and love, but it was filled with terrifying uncertainty. The third point is concentrating on her commitment to her mother to "maintain the family's integrity", feeling bound by responsibility. So in general, this inner turmoil indicates that she desires to escape oppression, but is afraid of the unknown, and at the same time feels bound by tradition.

3. Actions, mainly consisting of three points. The first point is daily work: she undertakes some repetitive tasks, such as cleaning, managing finances, and shopping, which reflect her sense of responsibility for the family.

The second point is attempting to escape, such as agreeing to leave with Frank, which is a brave step towards freedom.

The third point is the final hesitation, such as at the station, she froze, tightly grasping the iron railing, and refused to board the ship. This behavior reveals her inability to break free from psychological and social constraints - even though freedom is close at hand.

Speech：Eveline doesn't talk much in the story, but there‘re some inner thoughts. Through her interactions, she had a rough childhood—her mom passed away, her dad was abusive, and even though she's got a steady job and familiar surroundings back home, her future just seems stuck. Most of what we learn about her comes from other people's perspectives: like Miss Gavan looking down on her at work, her aging dad depending on her, and her wanting to run away with Frank. The reader is told what she's thinking rather than hearing her actually speak, and the descriptions of her actions really highlight how overwhelmed and trapped she feels.

Effects on others：Eveline’s dad is super controlling—he’s always ordering her around, didn’t approve of her boyfriend Frank, and just expects her to keep taking care of him till he dies，and she actually goes along with it.

Then there’s Miss Gavan at work—she’s prejudiced against Eveline too.

Frank wanted to take Eveline away and start fresh, but she just couldn’t leave. There was too much holding her back—like the promise she made to her mom, and not wanting to abandon her dad.

So all this stuff about Eveline it’s like the people around her are telling us her story.

Actions：Eveline's actions and her inner thoughts were inconsistent. Especially in the last paragraph, her inner struggle reached its peak. The invitation from Frank and her inner emotions formed a contrast. In the end, she chose not to challenge the future she had already determined, but to stay in her comfort zone.

She must escape!", shaping her as a quiet and reserved characteristic.

Thoughts

Eveline's thoughts struggled mainly on past family memories, both happiness and pains. She considered running away with Frank to start a new life, but she also pondered her promises, household duties, and responsibilities—who would take care of them?

Her thoughts tossed between the desiration for freedom and the duty to her family.

Actions

At the last moment, she thinks herself is prepared to leave with Frank, yet freezes in place, unable to go onto the board.

I was just passing by the corridor to check if the classroom doors were properly closed when a dog past my feet and bounded right into the class. My first thought was this could scare the students or knock over their books, and a sense of urgency settled in my chest because keeping the school environment orderly is what I’m here for. I saw a few kids jump in surprise, some even reaching out to pet it, but I knew I had to act fast before things got chaotic. I slowed my steps a little and walked toward the classroom, planning to gently lure it out with a soft call—hoping it’s friendly, and that I can find its owner soon to keep both the dog and the students safe.

A dog suddenly darts into the classroom, and I immediately straighten up—this is my chance! I jump up a little, waving my hands and raising my voice just enough to make sure everyone looks over: “Whoa, where’d this pup come from?!” My eyes flick around quickly, checking if my classmates are watching. When I see them all turning toward me, grinning or looking surprised, I lean down like I’m gonna gently guide the dog, but I make sure my movements are big enough to stay in the spotlight. I even laugh a little louder than usual and say, “Hey, buddy, you’re crashing our class! Want me to help you find your owner?” Deep down, I’m just glad I get to be the one everyone’s paying attention to right now—way better than sitting quiet at my desk.
