         <description><![CDATA[<div>Robert Abbott was born St. Simons Georgia to formally enslaved parents Flora and Thomas Abbott.&nbsp;<br>Abbott mother was born with slave status in savannah in 1847 to Portuguese who's father purchased their freedom. Abbott’s father came from a line of enslaved house workers. He died when Abbott was an infant.&nbsp;<br>Growing up he attended the&nbsp;Hampton institute in Virginia and had gone on to graduate from the Kent Law school in Illinois in 1899. He attempted setting up law practices in Indiana and Kansas but, racial prejudice kept him from building a successful law career.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1905 he founded the Chicago Defender (a newspaper)with an initial investment of 25 cent. This became one of the most widely circulated Black newspapers in the country. The Bub Billiken Club was a social club of Black youth in Chicago created in 1928 as a part of the Chicago Defender childrens page. Till this day, it is still active.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Robert is significant because of  his creation of the Chicago Defender. This newspaper grew to have one of the highest circulation of any Black owned newspapers. Due to it's high circulation, thousands of Blacks moved North, making it a thrilling national institution.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. In 1929, the Defender was selling more than 250,000 copies each week.&nbsp;<br>2. In 1919, the Illinois governor named Abbott the Chicago Commission on Race Relations.<br>3. Abbott later on in life became an alumni associations president.<br>4. Robert Abbott's house became a national historic landmark in 1979.<br>5. When Robert couldn't find a job as a lawyer, he turned to journalism to start the Defender.<br>6. In 2017, Abbott was inducted into the Chicago literary hall of fame.<br>7. Robert Abbott served  the Chicago Defender until his death on February 29,1940 to Bright's disease.</div>]]></description>
