Abbott mother was born with slave status in savannah in 1847 to Portuguese who's father purchased their freedom. Abbott’s father came from a line of enslaved house workers. He died when Abbott was an infant. 
Growing up he attended the Hampton institute in Virginia and had gone on to graduate from the Kent Law school in Illinois in 1899.
