Discuss the topic/research problem you would like to focus on for the final review, keeping in mind that this review will be the first step in your action research project. What search terms do you plan to use? Hint: Identify at least four key search terms. l Which databases and digital resources will you explore? Please comment on at least two classmates posts

I might gear this topic toward older students though I'm not positive if I will narrow it that much. I have been thinking about the field of academic advising and would like to see if advisors play any role in retention rates. I plan to use the library databases and focus on education journals as sources. I really like the idea of finding relevant articles and scanning their resource sections for more ideas and sources. I plan to use search terms such as : retention rates, college dropout reasons, academic advisors role in college retention, trends in college retention efforts, causes of college dropout rates.

I worry that some of my ideas are too broad while others, I fear are too narrow. * I would love to explore the trauma that is inherited from one generation to the next and identify how it impacts students in classrooms, * OR research the frequency and cause of misdiagnosis, mistaking trauma for learning disabilities, ADHD, and more. I am eager for any input or direction that may be offered in solidifying these possibilities. Based on our video from week 1, I have looked into the "Academic Search Complete" database from our school library, but would love any suggestions for where and how to find the best primary sources.

I have really been struggling to decide on my research topic. I was really interested in looking at how World Language teachers approach using non-binary gender pronouns in historically gendered languages like French, but there seems to be little research out there about this. So instead, I think I will go a totally different direction and research the impact of school-wide free meals for secondary students. I plan to start my research a little broadly, and depending on what I find, I may decide to focus on the impacts that these programs have on academics, or on behavior. I plan on utilizing Academic Search Complete as a starting point, and I will use the following keywords: "schoolwide free meals," "nutritional assistance," "reduced-price meals," and "food insecurity." To be honest I have about twenty other ideas for topics that are swirling around in my head, but I think I'll research this one. Any other advice on how to make this appropriately broad or narrow is very welcome!

I would like to focus on social emotional learning specifically for adolescents. There is a lot of talk about SEL and the importance of it, yet much of what I am familiar with is better suited for younger students. In 2020, when the pandemic hit, I started a Girls Group as my team wanted to offer some sort of "extracurriculars" remotely. It really sparked my interest in connecting with students in that way because it was so powerful when we met each week to check in and talk about issues related to identifying as a woman in society. In my search on Academic Search Complete and PsychINFO I have searched "social emotional learning" AND "adolescent or teenager" and found articles that focus on implementing programs or curriculum like art, school gardens, or dance. I'd like to focus on the "what works", going beyond just acknowledging SEL is important. So far I feel optimistic in what I am finding and realize through the searches I might be able to narrow the topic down a bit.

(I didn't know which board to post this in, so I'm adding it to both just in case!)

For my research question, I would like to dive into the effects of lacking or non-comprehensive sexual education curricula in public schools. I'd like to put emphasis on the effects on sex ed as well: the outcomes of both comprehensive and accurate sex ed versus the outcomes of strict or "abstinence only" sex ed. How does comprehensive sex ed impact students' futures? How does abstinence-only sex ed impact students' futures? What kind of sex ed is best for the health and wellbeing of adolescents? Should sex ed courses teach students about gender and sexuality, or stick to sexual health? I am very interested in the huge impact on adolescent sexual and mental health that sex ed has, as well as its very drastic differences even within our own country.

There are tons of search terms I could play around with, but I will definitely use sexual education, sex* ed*, comprehensive sex* ed*, abstinence sex* ed*, sexual health, teen pregnancy, adolescent sexual health, and adolescent reproductive health.

To conduct my research, I will use USM Libraries' Academic OneSearch, URSUS search (to look for books on my topic, potentially), and journals under the Social Sciences tab in the Journals & eBooks section on the library homepage. I may also elicit the help of Tim and some of the other librarians if I get lost or stuck.

I am confident in my research abilities and knowledge as I am trained in research assistance for my job in the library, so if anyone needs any help, feel free to reach out to me! (I only work on weekends because I'm also student teaching full-time, but feel free to stop by or call!)

I have not picked a final topic to research yet, but have a few ideas. The first topic would be how does hearing impairment at birth effect developmental delays and communication skills across the life span. I am interested in this topic due to having deaf family members and would personally like to know more on the subject and the effects. If I go through with this subject matter I would research both children who remain Deaf and those who get hearing implants, types of deafness are also something I would have to be mindful to. I would use the USM library sources to gather my martial, I also use Wiley for research articles.
The other topic I am interested in is how brain(neurologically) effects self injurious behavior. I find SIB to be a very interesting subject, and many times we explain it in the field through its function, but I am very curious on how chemicals effect the self injurious behavior. Can it be shown to be part of a fight or flight response? Are there brain abnormalities when it occurs? Are children who engage in SIB having certain brain functions other children are not. To research this topic I again would use online journal databases through the USM library and Wiley to access source material.

As many of you have mentioned in your post, I have not finalized my topic; I have not yet sat down and really narrowed down what I want. However some of the thoughts that I have for a topic are centered around the importance of disciplinary literacy versus content knowledge (and how those skills can transfer to other task), and the other idea that I have is centered on inclusive curriculum design and how that can help/hinder a classroom. I am planning on using JSTOR, and USM Libraries to locate the majority of my resources. As I haven't decided on which topic I will pick I have not narrowed down the key words just yet. Both topics are in realms that I am pretty passionate about and want more education on, so this would be a great opportunity for some exploration.
