Loun-Ariik is located in South Sudan, and although it is dry and desolate, he loved it there because he lived there all of his childhood with his loving family. He even got to go to school. This is where Salva was when the war began. This place was the center of his whole life, everything he new was here. He hadn't traveled much before, so his perception was purely influenced by Loun-Ariik. This is why he thought that Loun- Ariik was the best place for people to live.

The Nile river is just on the outskirts of Southern Sudan. It has a tropical, and wet climate. They began to cross the Nile very soon after Marial's death, which was very difficult. Salva was making a canoe with his Uncle to pass the river, and he says that the hard work was keeping his mind off of his beloved friend. At this point Salva is mainly focused on getting to Ethiopia. Without Marial all that Salva had was his Uncle. They stopped midway at a small village in the middle of the Nile to rest and get supplies, They got eaten up by mosquitos.

The Akobo Desert was one of the harshest environments Salva had to travel through. It had extreme heat, and scarce water. This was the first time that Salva had slowed down the group, due to his young age. They then get then get robbed by 6 men who take their weapons, and supplies. This leaves them disheartened and hopeless, but Salvas Uncle encourages Salva to make it through the desert. Wthout his Uncle, he wouldn't have ever made it out of the wretched Akobo Desert.

Salva finally made it to Ethiopia, with it's arid hot climate. He sadly made it without Marial or his Uncle. Salva's Uncle was killed by the robbers. Salva no longer has his Uncles protection, and becomes burdensome to the group. He is now determined more than ever to get to the refugee camp, knowing this is all his deceased friends before him would've wanted. His perspective is saddening and lonesome.

The Itang refugee camp was overly populated and hot. Salva had hope that part of his family is stationed at the camp. He never found any of his family. Salva stayed at the Itang Refugee camp for 6 years. It was relatively peaceful there until the Nuer tribe finds the camp and drives them out with guns. The soldiers drive them to the GIlo River to force them back into Sudan. Because of the commotion, Salva was put into a panic, just trying to get out alive.

The Gilo River is a hot and humid area where Salva had to cross. During the time a storm had made the water very choppy. He was chased out of the Itang Refugee Camp and into the river by armed soldiers. Many of the boys and men were shot, killed by the crocodiles that inhabited the area or drowned due to the hastening water. After this, Salva wonders why he was lucky and why he survived and thousands of others died. No one knew where to go next, they couldn't go back to war infested Sudan, and they certainly couldn't go back to Ethiopia. They decided to go to a Refugee camp in Kenya. They all began walking, and Salva naturally became leader of the "Lost Boys".

The Kakuma Refugee Camp was in the middle of a windy, dry desert completely isolated from all other life. There were tall fences with barbed wire, that made it feel like a prison. The camp was extremely overcrowded with more than 70,000 inhabitants. The overpopulation had caused fights were many were injured or killed. Salva had lived in these atrocious conditions for 5 years. He decided that this camp was no longer safe for him, so along with a few other young men, he walked for months to reach the Ifo Refugee Camp.

The Ifo refugee camp was the second camp in Kenya Salva went to. In the hot dry desert, It was like the Kakuma camp, almost like a prison, with barbed wire fences, and lots of security. Here Salva met an aid worker who started to teach him English and volleyball. One day he heard they were sending some orphans to go to America and have a family there. For many weeks he never saw his name on the list. Finally, one day he was told his name was on the list and Salva nearly had a heart attack with happiness.

Salva went to Rochester, New York, with a new family, as a part to the 'lost boy' program. New York is a very busy place, and can be confusing to people new to the area, so Salva had to adapt. Salva had to learn a whole new language, and American ways. He eventually got news about his dad, and wanted to go see him, through a friend who worked at the clinic. Being in America, Salva knew he could make a program to help the Sudanese, and other waterless people, so that is exactly what he did. Salva was determined to help people that had been in his situation.
